Young Gun Paul Spies

Safety First

By Art Aisner

March 3, 2025

Paul Spies, 38
Co-Founder, President, IronHead Roofing

LOCATION: Corvallis, Oregon

WEBSITE: ironheadroofing.com

COLLEGE: University of Oregon

FAMILY STATUS: Single, three children

Paul Spies stays focused on the marketing, financial strength, and growth strategy for his roofing company while trying to revolutionize jobsite safety.

How long have you been in the roofing industry, and how did you get your start?

PS: I started roofing in college between 2006 and 2007. Later, as a combat engineer in the U.S. Marines, I was exposed to construction projects through my military occupational specialty or MOS, which gave me a deeper understanding of the industry and led me to pursue roofing as a career.

What are a few reasons why your company is successful?

PS: We have an amazing team and our people are our biggest asset. The working relationship between me and my late business partner was highly effective. I focused on marketing, finances, and growth strategy, while he handled daily operations and leadership. We also built a strong company culture that attracts and retains top talent, and prioritize customer relationships while delivering exceptional service.

What are the big challenges in your particular market, and how is the company addressing them?

PS: OSHA and fall protection compliance is our biggest challenge. To address it, we developed an AI-based camera technology to monitor and ensure proper use of fall protection equipment.

We also have a skilled labor shortage – so finding and retaining experienced roofers and crews is an ongoing challenge. We’re focused on recruiting, training, and retaining top talent to maintain our high standards.

Do you see your age as an advantage or disadvantage in this business? Why or why not?

PS: Definitely an advantage. My late partner and I brought a lot of energy, innovation, and drive to the industry. We’re eager to improve and push boundaries, which gives us an edge in a traditionally old-school business.

“We have an amazing team and our people are our biggest asset. We also built a strong company culture that attracts and retains top talent, and prioritize customer relationships while delivering exceptional service.”

What area of roofing are you most passionate about?

PS: I’m most passionate about marketing, finances, and problem-solving. I love tackling challenges, especially when people say something can’t be done—that’s what motivates me to find a solution and make it happen.

What did you get from attending the Young Guns meeting at Best of Success?

PS: It opened my eyes to the incredible growth potential in this industry. Seeing other young roofing owners achieving massive success reinforced the belief that we can scale to the same level. It was both inspiring and motivating.

What’s next? What are your future plans for the business?

PS: We want to keep growing in a sustainable way, focusing on recruiting and retaining the best roofers in our market while making a positive impact in our community. We’re also developing our AI-powered safety technology for the roofing and construction industry to enhance job site safety and efficiency.
