Young Guns in Roofing

2026 Young Guns

Living the Brand

Young Gun Gavin May

By Art Aisner, Editor-in-Chief
Gavin May

March 3, 2026

With two young kids at the time, he felt like opportunities to improve would have to come from his community or network of business associates and friends.

“I enjoyed what I did, but I knew it was pretty dead-end,” he said, reflecting on his situation 11 years ago. “I knew I needed to do more, but I just didn’t know what.”

He turned to a friend whose family owned a roofing company and convinced them he could be a good fit for their sales and estimating operations. He wasn’t wrong and stayed there nearly six years, excelling at sales while learning the ins-and-outs of roofing. He then moved to Vertex Roofing Contractors, where he earned his way into an ownership stake.

Gavin May, 36
General Manager / co-owner, Vertex Roofing Contractors

LOCATION: Salt Lake City, Utah

WEBSITE: vertexroofingslc.com

COLLEGE: Salt Lake Community College; Associates Degree in General Studies

FAMILY STATUS: Married; Kamie May (13 years), Children: Timilynn (11), Taylee (9), and Tessa (6)

How did you get your start with this company and are there any career milestones that stand out?

GM: After moving over to Vertex Roofing in June of 2020, I started as an estimator. I sold $1.6 million in six months. I was then promoted to sales manager and sold over $3.5 million dollars the next year, and again the year after that. I was then promoted to general manager in 2024 while still standing as the sales manager. Last year, I sold over $4.8 million and joined the company as a partner/co-owner with our CEO and fearless leader, Devin Parker.

What are the top reasons why your company is successful?

GM: We have really great people/team who all really care about who we are, what we do and every single project.

  • We have focused a lot on company culture, expectations, pride, living our brand and feeling like a family.
  • We have worked really hard to build our brand and reputation to become a top-rated retail roofing company in the entire Utah Valley.
  • Our process from the time you call, to an estimator coming to your home, to the production manager/crews to job completion we make sure to have a peak (Vertex) level experience in the areas of; setting proper expectations, communication, customer service, quality, craftsmanship, cleanliness, satisfaction, confidence and determination.

Do you see your age as an advantage or a disadvantage in this business? Why or why not?

GM: I’ve been in the industry since I was 25, and I did this through the 2020 crisis and am stronger because of it. Both personally and as a company. We have learned and adapted. We have grown in culture and relationships. What to do and what NOT to do!

I’m pretty indifferent about my age or anyone’s age in the market, and more focused on the experience. Experience is everything. Follow through is everything. Seeing a problem and knowing how to fix it, is everything. Knowing you have really good people and incredible craftsman roofers helping on every single job, is everything.

What area of the roofing business are you most passionate about?

GM: The sales process because it builds confidence in yourself and the customer. You need expertise on all roofing styles; shingles, metal, membrane, synthetics, etc. People always want to work with the most knowledgeable person in any field. Marketing is also important for brand awareness, brand recognition, reputation, relatability, reaching the market in creative ways, and standing out.

Finally, leadership and growing people as individuals and in the industry. The stronger my team and the people I’m surrounded with every day, makes for a stronger me, stronger company and stronger legacy.

What did you gain from the Young Guns experience at Best of Success?

GM: A lot of good, production and positive insight. It identified areas we need to grow as a company, and areas we are doing really well in. We have a lot to be proud of, but there’s still a lot we can learn, grow, and do better. I appreciated everyone’s time, patience, passion and dedication. Lots of wisdom/expertise/drive in one room. It was a pleasure and I’d definitely recommend it and do it again!

What’s next? What are your future plans for the business?

GM: We are continuing to thrive and grow. We’d like to grow more in the commercial market as our primary focus has been residential retail. We have also expanded into multi-family and property management.

Future forward, we’d like to add onto the company and become a full-service provider with siding, soffits, fascia, and rain-gutters all provided in-house, rather than subbing out the extras. We’d like to continue to build our brand, name and reputation and plan to become an 8-figure roofing company.

Any advice to other young contractors in the business?

GM: I feel like I hear about a new roofer coming into the market every week, and I’m all about opportunity. But if you don’t know what you’re doing, if you don’t have the right people, if you are not providing and delivering top-quality, and if you’re not focusing on the retail residential/commercial market… you might not make it.
