Young Guns in Roofing

2026 Young Guns

Hands-on Experience and Digital Fluency

Young Gun Bradley Rathjen

BRADLEY RATHJEN

Being underestimated is Bradley Rathjen's competitive advantage. At 23, the estimator and project manager at Madsen Roofing & Waterproofing in Sacramento, Calif., has learned that when clients doubt you because of your age, there's only one response: become undeniable. That mindset helped him secure several million dollars in work during his first year in the office—not by taking shortcuts, but by holding himself to a higher standard than anyone expected.

While some might view youth as a liability in this industry, Rathjen has turned it into an asset by pairing energy and adaptability with an unwavering commitment to professionalism—earning the respect of owners, manufacturers, and consultants alike, one project at a time.

How long have you been in the roofing industry and how did you get your start?

BR: I began my roofing career in the summer of 2020 after graduating high school. I spent approximately three years working in the field with single-ply, coatings, tile, shingles, as well as leaks and repairs. I’m now currently an estimator and project manager for the business, handling all kinds of roof systems on commercial/industrial and multi-family complexes. I entered the industry through my family and ultimately transitioned into the family business.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT THINKING ABOUT ROOFING? Camping, boating, dirt biking, family time, traveling.

What are the top reasons why your company or the company you’re involved with is successful?

BR: Established Local Reputation. For 39 years, our company has built a strong reputation throughout the Greater Sacramento area as a competent, skilled, and reliable roofing contractor, supported by a highly detailed office staff and an exceptionally skilled field workforce.

Manufacturer-Certified Expertise. We maintain strong relationships with leading manufacturers and are approved to install and warranty high-performance roofing systems, providing our clients access to extended warranties and installations that meet the highest industry standards.

Long Term Value Focus: We focus on what is best for the building—not just the lowest upfront cost—by clearly explaining system options, risks, and life-cycle value to help owners avoid premature failures and costly surprises.

What are the big challenges in your market, and how is the company addressing them?

BR: One of the biggest challenges in the roofing industry is the lack of technical knowledge and the tendency for corners to be cut. This can make it difficult to compete with contractors who do not fully adhere to local building codes or manufacturer-recommended installation practices.

Do you see your age as an advantage or disadvantage in this business?

"I've found it challenging to be taken seriously due to my age, which has pushed me to hold myself to a higher standard."

BR: I find my age to be an advantage because it allows me to bring energy, adaptability, and strong attention to detail. Growing up in the technology age, I’ve been able to quickly learn and effectively use estimating software, digital takeoffs, and submittal processes. While I continue to build my experience, I’m supported by a strong team with deep roofing knowledge that has played a key role in my professional growth. On the other hand, I’ve found it challenging to be taken seriously due to my age, which has pushed me to hold myself to a higher standard. I place a strong emphasis on professionalism, both in how I present myself and in making sure I ask the right questions and fully understand a roofing system or topic before offering input.

What area of the roofing business are you most passionate about? Why?

BR: I’m most passionate about building and protecting my reputation in the roofing industry. In my role, I interact with all sides of the business—owners, manufacturers, suppliers, consultants, and internal teams—and I take that responsibility seriously. I work hard to demonstrate effort, integrity, and a genuine desire to grow into a respected professional in the industry. I’ve already grown significantly, having helped produce several million dollars in work during my first year as an estimator, and I’m motivated to continue building on that momentum.
