VIDEO: Roofing Safety Training for Estimators
Training for estimators is just as important as ensuring the safety of installers on a jobsite
Safety training for roofing installers is obvious and an obligation, as it helps keep them safe while on the job, but have you provided training for your estimators as well?
It may not occur to roofing contractors to give their estimators some training and guidance when it comes to safety, but as Tammy Clark, safety expert and owner of Tammy K. Clark Companies says, this can be a crucial part of keeping them and roofing crews safe.
"One of the reasons that I have created a training program just for estimators and I like to work with estimators is because they're the first touch, they're the first eyes and ears on any project and so I've given them five things that they need to look for," she said.
Clark and RC Publisher Jill Bloom head to a residential jobsite to demonstrate the importance of training estimators on how to evaluate a job so crews can show up prepared to work safely. For instance, conventional fall protection might not work on every job, while others need to be cautious about working near electrical lines.
By evaluating a job's safety risks and the lay of the land, estimators can even help determine how materials will be shipped and managed on the job and reduce the risk of property damage.
"There are a lot of challenges with residential projects: 'How am I gonna get my materials into the project, onto the roof without putting my employees at risk of carrying things up and down?'" she said. "How are we going to get the materials out of the project?"
