Ken Kelly vuelve a Kelly Roofing con “mentalidad de fundador”

Casi seis años después de haber vendido, el contratista de Florida desafía la tendencia del capital privado para rescatar del cierre a la empresa familiar.

A veces, liderar no significa comenzar algo nuevo, sino responder al llamado de regresar.

En una de las historias más sorprendentes que ha visto la industria del roofing en años, Ken Kelly, veterano líder del sector y ex Contratista del Año de RoofingContractor, recuperó oficialmente la propiedad de Kelly Roofing después de que la empresa enfrentara una crisis financiera inesperada.

Apenas tres años después de jubilarse y vender el negocio familiar que dirigió durante tres décadas, Kelly está de nuevo en la presidencia, decidido a restaurar la empresa que su familia fundó en 1972.

Con sede en Naples, Kelly Roofing se convirtió en una presencia habitual en la lista Top 100 de RC y en uno de los contratistas de roofing más reconocidos del suroeste de Florida. Los reportes publicados hace unas semanas de que la empresa cerraría operaciones después de que sus cuentas bancarias fueran congeladas dejaron incrédulos a muchos en la industria.

La situación también dejó a muchos clientes tratando de recuperar sus depósitos y terminar proyectos inconclusos, algo que Kelly se comprometió a resolver.

La empresa atravesó un importante cambio de propietarios en enero de 2025, cuando Kelly Roofing e Integrity Roofing & Gutters anunciaron una fusión respaldada por la firma de capital privado Monument MicroCap Partners.

La llamada que llevó a Ken Kelly a volver 

Kelly dijo que su camino de regreso comenzó con una emotiva llamada de empleados que temían estar a punto de perder sus trabajos. Mientras disfrutaba de su retiro, se enteró de que el negocio estaba al borde del cierre. En cuestión de días se reunió con el equipo, evaluó la situación, negoció con el banco y completó la compra de Kelly Roofing en menos de una semana.

"No podía defraudar a los empleados ni a los clientes", explicó Kelly durante este podcast Best of Success con Art Aisner y Jill Bloom, de Roofing Contractor. "No se trata de recibir un sueldo. Se trata de hacer lo correcto".

Para Kelly, las prioridades estaban claras. Primero había que proteger a los empleados cuya experiencia y dedicación ayudaron a construir la reputación de la empresa. Después, cumplir los compromisos con los clientes, mantener las relaciones de confianza con los proveedores y preservar el legado de Kelly Roofing.

Aunque la compañía había enfrentado dificultades después de varias adquisiciones, Kelly considera que volver a concentrarse en una sola marca y restaurar la cultura que hizo exitosa a la empresa la colocará en una posición de estabilidad a largo plazo.

Planea simplificar las operaciones, eliminar niveles administrativos innecesarios y retomar los principios de liderazgo que guiaron a la compañía durante décadas. Entre ellos están las prácticas del Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) y una filosofía de liderazgo basada en 'I intend to' ('Tengo la intención de'), que permite a los empleados tomar decisiones al mismo tiempo que fomenta la responsabilidad.

La importancia de la mentalidad del fundador

Kelly también habló con franqueza sobre las lecciones que dejó la propiedad de capital privado. Aunque subrayó que el capital privado puede ofrecer una excelente estrategia de salida para muchos contratistas, recomendó a los propietarios de empresas comprender plenamente las realidades emocionales y operativas que llegan después de una venta.

Una de las mayores lecciones, dijo, es la importancia de la mentalidad del fundador.

"Cuando el fundador se va, a veces el alma de la organización también se va", dijo Kelly, al señalar que el liderazgo, la cultura y el compromiso con los clientes a menudo no pueden reemplazarse fácilmente.

De cara al futuro, Kelly es optimista. Espera que la empresa vuelva a registrar resultados financieros positivos en cuestión de meses antes de explorar, eventualmente, oportunidades para que los empleados sean propietarios mediante un Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). En lugar de buscar una expansión acelerada o un crecimiento impulsado por tormentas, su visión se centra en un éxito constante y sostenible, construido sobre el servicio al cliente, la disciplina operativa y una cultura empresarial sólida.

Para una industria construida sobre la resiliencia, el regreso de Kelly sirve como recordatorio de que liderar a menudo significa dar un paso al frente cuando la gente más lo necesita.
