Seguridad en el trabajo

Departamento de Trabajo destina $12.7 millones para fortalecer la capacitación en seguridad laboral

Las subvenciones apoyarán programas de capacitación y el desarrollo de materiales educativos para prevenir riesgos laborales en industrias de alto riesgo, como el roofing.

El Departamento de Trabajo de Estados Unidos anunció la disponibilidad de $12.7 millones en subvenciones Susan Harwood para apoyar programas de capacitación y educación dirigidos a trabajadores y empleadores, con el objetivo de identificar y prevenir riesgos relacionados con la seguridad y la salud en el trabajo.

Las subvenciones, administradas por la Administración de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (OSHA), buscan mejorar la calidad del empleo mediante oportunidades de capacitación impartidas por instructores para trabajadores y empleadores de pequeñas empresas, con especial atención a industrias con altas tasas de lesiones, enfermedades y accidentes fatales.

Los fondos se destinarán a programas de capacitación sobre identificación, prevención y control de riesgos laborales, así como a iniciativas que informen a los trabajadores sobre sus derechos y a los empleadores sobre sus responsabilidades bajo la Ley de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional.

Categorías disponibles

Las organizaciones interesadas podrán presentar solicitudes en dos categorías:

•    Capacitación sobre temas específicos, para apoyar programas educativos enfocados en identificar y prevenir riesgos laborales, incluyendo la capacitación sobre peligros de seguridad y salud definidos por OSHA. 

•    Desarrollo de materiales de capacitación y educación, para crear materiales de calidad listos para su uso en aulas y enfocados en la identificación y prevención de riesgos en el lugar de trabajo. 

Quiénes pueden solicitar los fondos

Las subvenciones están disponibles para organizaciones sin fines de lucro, incluidas organizaciones comunitarias, religiosas y de base; asociaciones de empleadores; sindicatos; asociaciones conjuntas entre empleadores y trabajadores; tribus indígenas; universidades e instituciones públicas; entidades que operan programas de consulta en sitio de OSHA y los Centros de Educación del Instituto de Capacitación de OSHA.

Las solicitudes deberán presentarse a más tardar a las 11:59 p.m. (hora del este) del 31 de julio.

Los solicitantes deberán registrarse en Grants.gov y en el System of Award Management (SAM) antes de enviar su solicitud.

Las subvenciones llevan el nombre de la doctora Susan Harwood, quien durante sus 17 años en OSHA participó en el desarrollo de normas de seguridad relacionadas con el benceno, el formaldehído, los patógenos transmitidos por la sangre y el plomo en la industria de la construcción. También fue autora principal de la norma de OSHA sobre el polvo de algodón, que prácticamente eliminó la bisinosis —una enfermedad pulmonar con síntomas similares al asma— entre los trabajadores textiles.
