Giving Back
Roofing Good Deeds: Uplifting Stories from Across the Industry (April 10, 2026)
From blood drives to community heroes and workforce training, roofing professionals are making a meaningful impact beyond the jobsite.

Antis Roofing & Waterproofing in Irvine, Calif., recently marked a milestone in its community outreach efforts, celebrating its 200th blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross.
From lifesaving blood drives to honoring everyday heroes and training the next generation of tradespeople, roofing companies and organizations across the country continue to demonstrate the industry’s commitment to giving back.
In Irvine, Calif., Antis Roofing & Waterproofing in Irvine recently marked a milestone in its community outreach efforts, celebrating its 200th blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. What began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to help offset the closure of large donation sites has grown into a sustained initiative that has collected more than 4,700 units of blood.
The effort was spearheaded by Antis Roofing President Susan DeGrassi, who serves on the board of the Red Cross of Orange County. Under her leadership, the company stepped in during a critical shortage and has continued hosting drives even as conditions normalized.
Over time, the events have evolved into community gatherings, often featuring music and meals. Through a partnership with nonprofit California Love Drop, donors are treated to food from Wahoo’s Fish Taco. At the 200th drive, founder Wing Lam joined the effort, preparing fish and chicken tacos with rice and beans for attendees dining together in the company’s parking lot. The milestone underscores how a single initiative can grow into a lasting community resource.
In the Pacific Northwest, Guardian Roofing, Gutters & Insulation is expanding its impact through storytelling and recognition. The company is partnering with Portland television station KATU on its “Everyday Heroes” initiative, which highlights volunteers and nonprofit organizations working to strengthen their communities.
“Everyday Heroes reminds us that the strength of a community is measured by the people who show up for others,” said Mat Rzucidlo, president of Guardian Roofing, Gutters & Insulation. “It is a privilege to help recognize those whose kindness and dedication make a lasting difference in the lives of their neighbors.”
The initiative aligns with Guardian’s broader philanthropic efforts, including its HALO Project Roof Giveaway. The annual program provides free roofs to homeowners facing financial hardship, many of whom have dedicated years to serving others as veterans, caregivers, volunteers or nonprofit leaders.
“The HALO Project is rooted in gratitude,” Rzucidlo said. “It is our way of giving back to people who have given so much of themselves to their communities. A safe roof brings comfort, stability and peace of mind, and we are honored to help provide that when it is needed most.”
Nominations for Everyday Heroes opened April 9 and run through July 29, 2026, with KATU featuring selected stories across its platforms. One nominee will also be chosen in connection with the HALO Project, extending recognition into tangible support.
Meanwhile, 12 News in Binghamton, N.Y., reported that a collaboration between education and industry is helping prepare students for future opportunities. Broome-Tioga BOCES building trades students recently completed a three-week commercial roofing training unit led by Evans Roofing Company of Elmira, N.Y.
The hands-on program introduced students to a range of commercial roofing systems, including thermoplastic and rubber materials, while preparing them for the upcoming SkillsUSA state competition.
Senior Kaigen Cobb, the 2025 state champion, plans to compete again this year after placing 15th nationally. While he does not intend to pursue roofing as a career, he said the experience has been valuable.
“It’s very interesting to learn about it,” Cobb said, noting that the trade can be both challenging and rewarding for those who choose it.
Educators say Cobb’s success helped spark the partnership with Evans Roofing, opening doors for more students to gain real-world experience. The class will showcase its skills at the SkillsUSA state championships, scheduled for April 23 at the Syracuse Fairgrounds.
