These roofing contractors have what it takes to make it onto next year’s Top 100 list.

These roofing contractors were on the cusp of making it onto the 2021 Top 100 List, and through improvements to everything from technology to staff, can be expected to make a return next year, placing them at the top of our “Ones to Watch” list.

Couto Construction

Scope of Work: 10% commercial, 90% residential

Location: New Bedford, Mass.

Founded: 1987

Specialty: Roofing, doors/windows, siding, insulation and gutters. Prides itself on being the most knowledgeable contractors in the area.

Number of Employees: 50

2020 Revenue: $15.6 million

How you’ll make the list next year? “We've increased our sales staff by four to bring us to 13,” said David Cuddy, marketing coordinator. “We've increased our marketing budget and track every inquiry for source and outcome so that we spend those dollars wisely. We constantly improve our production systems to maximize the process and make it repeatable.”

Black Hills Exteriors

Scope of Work: 15% commercial, 85% residential

Location: Rapid City, S.D.

Founded: 2011

Specialty: General contracting hail claims and maintenance-free exterior remodels. In-house construction crews specializing in siding, seamless gutters, windows and doors, Versetta stone, soffit and fascia.

Number of Employees: 45

2020 Revenue: $14 million

How you’ll make the list next year? “We have been investing into the company tremendously,” said Chad Enger, CEO. “We doubled our fleet and added staff in all departments. We are also sending our staff through university-like courses online in which each course is tailored to each staffs position, from reception, to sales, production, bookkeeping, and even business courses for the CEO like myself. Were always looking for new ways to develop our skills and it shows every year.”

Scope of Work: 100% commercial, 0% residential

Location: Rockingham, Va.

Founded: 2006

Specialty: Complete roofing services in Central and Western Virginia, including new construction, reroof, flat roofs or pitched, and Green Building Systems.

2020 Revenue: $14.3 million

How you’ll make the list next year? “We are refocusing our business model on negotiated customers and repairs and maintenance,” said Jody Williams, CFO. “So far in the first quarter of 2021, we have record profitability and a strong backlog of business through the summer.”

Scope of Work: 5% commercial, 95% residential

Location: Phoenix, Ariz.

Founded: 1982

Specialty: Full range of roofing services including free inspections, repair of minor roof leaks and expert residential and commercial installations.

Number of Employees: 110

2020 Revenue: $11 million

How you’ll make the list next year? “Our marketing strategies were modified to include more TV during the presidential campaign and we focused more on our existing client base,” said Mandi Hatcher, sales director. “Management implemented policies and procedures to cut down on waste both inner office and on the roof. We have always run like a well-oiled machine.”
