Roofing Contractor Named Hazel Park’s Citizen of the Month

Thousands of children across Metro Detroit benefited from the coat drive organized by roofing contractor Ruben Gonzalez.

The city of Hazel Park, located on the outskirts of Detroit, recently recognized roofing contractor Ruben Gonzalez as its “Citizen of the Month,” honoring his extraordinary commitment to serving local families in need.

Gonzalez, founder of Ais Construction, again helped distribute winter coats to more than 3,500 children, ensuring families across the community were prepared for Michigan’s harsh winter season.

“Mr. Gonzalez, thank you so much for your efforts and the amazing things you did to put on this special event to provide coats for all of those children,” said City Manager Edward Klobucher during an evening presentation at City Hall. “Your efforts are amazing and truly commendable. We are grateful for what you do. We appreciate you very much. This is an honor that is very well deserved. Thank you from the bottom of all of our hearts.”

In accepting the award, Gonzalez spoke candidly about why the effort mattered so deeply to him.

“As someone who comes from a low-income family and has been in the position of needing help, I understand how hard it can be to be vulnerable,” he explained. “Asking for support takes real courage, and no one should ever feel ashamed for it.

I also know a warm coat is not just a coat — it’s comfort, safety and a reminder that someone cares. That’s why I’m so grateful for the City of Hazel Park, for every volunteer, donor, organization and organizer who helped make this coat drive happen.”

Gonzalez also credited the greater community for its support and encouraged them to continue treating people of need with dignity.

Within the roofing industry, Gonzalez is known as a valued member of the Techos y Más Editorial Advisory Board, consistently offering insight and leadership to strengthen the Latino contractor community nationwide. His commitment to elevating the industry mirrors the same servant-leadership mindset that led to this local recognition.
