Pittsburgh-based The Scalo Companies, a roofing consortium with roots dating back to 1956, announced it had received the prestigious RCCS Safety Award, recognizing its outstanding commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Jack Scalo, president and CEO, is a second-generation roofing contractor who ascended to the C-suite in 1997 and will be a featured speaker at this year’s Best of Success conference, which takes place December 4-6 in Bonita Springs, Fla.

The RCCS Safety Award, awarded by the Roofing Contractors Committed to Safety Insurance Co., is given to companies that meet stringent safety and insurance benchmarks. The company said in a September 25 news release that it reflects Scalo’s “dedication to creating a safe and efficient work environment for all employees.”

RCCS is a specialized insurance company designed exclusively for roofing contractors. With a membership of more than 25 top-tier roofing companies, RCCS offers its members a unique blend of tailored insurance coverage and an emphasis on safety.

To qualify for membership, contractors must meet rigorous criteria, including a proven track record of safety performance, adherence to industry best practices, and a commitment to continuous improvement in safety protocols.

Companies must meet several rigorous criteria to qualify for the RCCS Safety Award. These benchmarks include:

  • Insurance Performance: Companies must keep all three types of insurance —general liability, workers’ compensation, and auto liability — below anticipated loss levels. The Scalo Companies met and exceeded this requirement, showing superior risk and claims management.
  • Jobsite Safety: Ensure that no job sites visited by a third-party safety consulting company receive a jobsite alert. Scalo has shown exemplary adherence to safety protocols, with all job sites receiving favorable evaluations, demonstrating consistent dedication to hazard mitigation and proactive safety measures.
  • Benchmarking Goals: Companies must stay below their Insurance Captive’s benchmarking goals. Scalo’s disciplined safety approach kept them well below targets, showing their strong focus on risk reduction and maintaining a secure work environment.
  • Jobsite Scores: To earn this award, jobsite scores for the policy year must average 80 or higher. Scalo achieved an impressive average across their sites, reflecting the standards of site organization, safety practices, and crew awareness.
  • Best Practice Standards Compliance: Companies must fully comply with all RCCS Best Practice Standards, ensuring that its safety protocols, risk assessments, and training programs align with the highest industry standards.

“Through a combination of strategic risk management, employee training, and a culture of safety awareness, The Scalo Companies have demonstrated that they are not only leaders in construction but also safety performance,” the company said of the honor. “This RCCS Safety Award serves as a testament to [our] unwavering dedication to the well-being of the workforce and safety of their projects.”
