SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Two outstanding roofing contractors in their respective markets have been named the 2022 Contractors of the Year during the 18th Best of Success conference.
Rackley Roofing Company of Carthage, Tenn., earned the 2022 Commercial Contractor of the Year award, while Wedge Roofing from Petaluma, Calif., received the 2022 Residential Contractor of the Year award.
RC presented the honors on Monday during the Best of Success conference in front of more than 300 attendees at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, Ariz. Dozens of roofing contractors from across the country submitted applications for the award earlier this year.
Rackley Roofing, founded in 1974, has multiple locations throughout Tennessee providing high-quality commercial installations, inspections and maintenance. The company’s penchant for adopting the latest technology, combined with a top-down policy of inclusivity and diversity, has earned it a stellar reputation – as well as $42.9 million in revenue in 2021, placing it at #48 on RC’s Top 100 list of 2022.
“I recently read a quote that says: ‘True stars rise to the top not by chance but through purpose and passion,'" said RC Publisher Jill Bloom. "Rackley’s purpose and passion shines through the way they care about their people. We are honored to have them as our Commercial Roofing Contractor of the Year for 2022!”
Other key attributes to Rackley's success noted by the RC team include its dynamic marketing, including recent sponsorship deals with NFL’s Tennessee Titans and NASCAR, as well as its commitment to its 220 employees regarding safety, training and offering avenues for personal and professional growth.
“This is not something that we've ever thought about, we just want to build a great company, and it's very rewarding," said Curtis Sutton, president, upon receiving the award. "All I say is reach for dreams. I'm just the high school graduate that got in the roofing industry and loved it, and we hired a bunch of team members ... that's living one dream and we're trying to be the best company that we can be and change the industry."
Rackley Roofing is also committed to elevating the industry as a whole, becoming a leader in the use of technology. Rackley has brought industry-leading technologies to the forefront, including Rackley RoofCheck and Rackley RoofView, the use of a Virtual Reality Fall Protection Training Program, and even WT2 Plus in-ear devices that can translate speech into any language, breaking down communication barriers.
"I want to say thank you to all the folks that are at home actually getting the work done while we get to sit here and be on stage, because we couldn't do it without being able to trust them," said COO Michelle Boykin.
Launched in 1976, Wedge Roofing has evolved into a premier residential and commercial roofing contractor servicing sprawling territories stretching from San Francisco’s North Bay through Silicon Valley. The company offers award-winning work in asphalt, metal and spray foam roofing. Sixty full-time employees helped generate $13.5 million in revenue last year, placing them among the top revenue-generating contractors around the country for the second-straight year.
“To do so coming out of some of the most stringent lockdowns and health and safety requirements implemented nationwide during the COVID-19 pandemic — and the supply crunch that ensued — is all the more impressive,” RC Editor-in-Chief Art Aisner said. “Add on the commitment to operational excellence, curbing waste and giving back to the communities they serve, Wedge has shown the ability to go above and beyond.”
Wedge’s growth as a company continued to balloon, as did its reputation for taking on the toughest projects and completing them with high standards. The result has been a long list of award-winning installations across multiple roofing categories (asphalt shingles, metal, sprayfoam) both before and after COVID-19 pandemic. The company’s consistency is exemplified with some impressive statistics over the years, including more than 10,000 customers and 3.5 million square feet of rooftops — primarily within a 20-mile radius of their facility in Northern California. They’re also leading contractors in the region on the environmental front as certified "green" contractor — with waste reduction and sustainability built into their business model.
“Those of you that know me, I'm very rarely speechless, this may be the first time,” said Gary Harvey, general manager, upon receiving the award. "We strive daily to walk our talk, we focus on being better tomorrow than you were yesterday.
"On behalf of our company, I'm honored to receive this award."
