The Scull Residence is a Queen Anne Victorian-style home located in the heart of Black Hills, a mountain range in Rapid City, S.D. In 2020, a hailstorm caused significant damage to the entire roof, requiring a replacement.

Black Hills Exteriors, a full-service remodeling and restoration company in the Black Hills region, was selected to take on this restoration project. The finished project went on to win the Gold Award in the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) 2022 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program

Gold Winner – ARMA 2022 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards

Project Name: Scull Residence
Location: Rapid City, S.D.
Roofing Contractor: Black Hills Exteriors
Project Size: 5,500 square feet
Challenges: Over 80% of roof is considered high-pitched steep slope; The owners wanted two shingle colors integrated together while still preserving characteristics of the Queen Anne-style Victorian home.
Products Used: Two colors of CertainTeed Carriage House shingles

Historic Charm: Beauty and Preservation

The Scull Residence represents the Victorian era's most popular home design, Queen Anne, which was introduced to America in 1880 by the English architect Richard Norman Shaw. This style of home is characterized by elaborate color schemes, grand architecture towers, and high-pitched roofs with patterned shingles. Queen Anne Victorian-style homes are renowned for their striking stature and adornment.

The homeowner wanted to emulate the bold and unconventional color schemes that defined the time period. To achieve this goal, Black Hills Exteriors integrated two asphalt shingle colors to maintain the home’s distinct characteristics, giving the roof a unique curb appeal. The contractor selected a rounded or “fish scale” shingle, determining this shape would provide a vintage aesthetic to this historic home. Steeply pitched and complex, the roofline on the Scull Residence provides ornate, visual interest.

Addressing Challenges: Hailstorms

The Black Hills area is prone to hailstorms and high winds. The project was challenging due to a 2020 hailstorm that damaged the entire roof and the difficulty of upholding the timeless exterior. Before the contractor could begin work, a lengthy process ensued with the insurance companies on the correct estimate for the project. Almost a year after the storm, Black Hills Exteriors received approval to start the restoration process.

Once work started, Black Hills Exteriors had to plan around good weather since the roof would be exposed to the elements for a week. Utilizing CertainTeed Carriage House shingles, Black Hills Exteriors fully repaired the extensive hail damage on the 5,500-square-foot roof. This newly installed roof system with its multiple laminated layers and 130 mph wind rating will protect against harsh winters for years to come. Black Hills Exteriors provided the homeowner with a high-performing roof that complements the aesthetic of the structure.

Asphalt Shingles: A Reliable Roofing Solution

Asphalt was the clear choice for this project due to its performance, layers of coverage, and a wide array of rich, gorgeous colors. The use of asphalt meant the contractor could provide conformity over the roof’s imperfections while still providing lasting protection. Furthermore, asphalt shingles can be manufactured to resemble slate, which is a typical color for the Queen Anne style. Black Hills Exteriors achieved an elegant look for this Victorian-style home by understanding the historic character and applying the versatile design of asphalt shingles.

ARMA honored Black Hills Exteriors with the 2022 Gold Award in the Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program. This program recognizes low and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects across North America based on four categories: Reasons for Selecting Asphalt, Performance, Beauty, and Distinction. ARMA received over 80 submissions this year, which were judged by a panel of industry experts and members of the trade media.

Black Hills Exteriors was thrilled to win the award and truly felt accomplished for their effort on the Scull Residence. The prize money was distributed to the team members who executed the project. This is the second award Black Hills Exteriors has won in the annual Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program. The first honor was the 2020 Bronze Award presented to Black Hills Exteriors for their work on the Central States Fairgrounds Horticulture Building.
