Finding Success After the Storm
A former roofing contractor that now handles contractor engagement with TAMKO weighs in on communication and follow through.

Another storm season is largely winding down for roofing contractors in several markets across the country, but there’s still plenty of opportunities out there to finish the peak roofing season strong.
Jon Abernathy, the director of contractor engagement, TAMKO Building Products, recently joined the RC "Best of Success Podcast Show" to talk about some of the pain points he experienced as a roofing contractor for more than 20 years, and some of the avoidable mistakes he still sees made by roofers today.
Storm season may be winding down, but the opportunity to strengthen your roofing business is not. Jon Abernathy, director of contractor engagement at TAMKO Building Products, joins the "Best of Success Podcast Show" to share lessons from more than 20 years as a roofing contractor. From better homeowner communication and consistent follow-up to documenting roof conditions with the right context, Abernathy breaks down common mistakes contractors can avoid while building a stronger customer experience. Listen to the full conversation and learn how getting the fundamentals right can make a lasting impression.
“If there's anything you want to improve… it would always be how well we communicate with homeowners, and then setting expectations with the homeowners around customer experience and communication,” he explained.
Follow through is, by far, the biggest gap roofing contractors leave behind when responding to a storm-impacted community, he added.
“Where roofers fail the most is communication and follow-up,” he said. “Homeowners truly care about that more than anything else.”
Abernathy also discussed the importance of documenting roof conditions with photos, reports, and notes of conversations with owners. Just as important, is providing proper context to the information.
He said the proper process for taking photos includes thinking about where the person on the receiving end of the photo can identify where it's located on the property, and why it's relevant to the roofing discussion. Listen to the full conversation now.
