Roofer Killed in Rooftop Fall in Mobile, Alabama
The Investigation into the First Reported Fatal Roof Fall of 2026 is Underway

Authorities said a roofing contractor working on a metal roof accidentally fell to his death last week in Alabama.
Officials with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office said Johnny Fabbo Rosario, 38, was part of team working on the roof of a large industrial building at SSAB on Highway 43 when he fell through a roof panel during his shift on Jan. 20.
Rosario, who worked for G.A. West, was replacing the metal roof panels on one of the large industrial buildings when he stepped on an unstable panel and fell roughly 100 feet below. He struck a metal staircase on the way down and suffered a severe head injury. Rosario was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
Police reports indicated there were two groups of workers onsite, with one team doing deconstruction and reconstruction on the roof and another team on the ground doing assembly and staging. Rosario was on the roof looking for a cutting wheel to finish cutting roof panels when he stepped on a panel that already had a seam cut on one side, authorities said.
Reports said Rosario was not wearing fall-safety equipment at the time. Officials said the investigation is complete and ruled accidental.
Company officials with SSAB Alabama released a statement expressing condolences to Rosario's family and that they continue to cooperate with law enforcement and regulatory authorities while they investigate the incident. Attempts to reach G.A. West were unsuccessful prior to publication.
Roofing remains one of the most deadly occupations in the country, ranking third in 2023, the last year data was available. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is expected to release updated data next month.
