John Gooding, Chairman of GSM Roofing, Dies at 80

The roofing industry is remembering the late John Gooding, chairman of GSM Roofing in Ephrata, Pa., and a former National Roofing Contractors Association chairman. Gooding died on Sept. 7 at the age of 80.
Born in 1945, Gooding earned an associate's degree in administration and accounting from Goldey-Beacom College in Delaware, and was later awarded an honorary doctor of public service degree from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
As his obituary states, Gooding served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. After his service, he joined the family business, GSM Roofing (formerly Gooding Simpson and Mackes Inc.), founded by his father in 1946. The company grew to become a regional roofing contractor, and GSM Industrial was incorporated thanks to Gooding's efforts as well as those of his brother-in-law, Jim Towers.
Gooding was active in the industry beyond his company. He served as president of the Roofing Alliance in 1999, then as chairman of the board for the NRCA from 2003 to 2004. According to the NRCA, Gooding served as NRCA chairman of the board-elect from 2002-03; vice chairman from 1997-1999; and as a director from 1989-92, 1994-96 and 1999-2002. He was a member of many committees, serving as chairman of the Affiliate Relations Committee, Budget and Finance Committee, Convention Committee, Exhibitor Advisory Committee, Health and Safety Committee, Industry Advisory Board, Insurance Board of Governors and International Relations Committee, among other committees.
In 2016, the NRCA recognized Gooding's contributions with the J.A. Piper Award, the association's highest honor.
Outside of roofing, Gooding dedicated himself to community service, including through the Gooding Group Foundation and other charitable endeavors. He participated in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a leader with Troop 99, and sat on the board of Thaddeus Stevens College. He devoted his time to the High Center for Family Business, where he was later inducted into its Hall of Fame. His pastimes included fishing, hunting and traveling the world, which he enjoyed doing with his kids, grandkids, family and friends.
In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, Highland Presbyterian Church, address above or The Roofing Alliance.
