The Manufacturing Leadership Council, a division of the National Association of Manufacturers, recognized Owens Corning as a finalist in the 2023 Manufacturing Leadership Awards at the organization’s annual awards gala held in late June.

Owens Corning was honored for advancing operational efficiencies in its roofing plants by implementing digital tools to monitor processes and asset health from any location. According to the Manufacturing Leadership Council, finalist recognition indicates that “…the project is among the industry’s most innovative and noteworthy,” as selected by a “distinguished” panel of judges.

The “Transforming Operational Capabilities with Superior Remote Support” project enables a regional support model: employees, monitoring systems offsite, can recommend solutions to individual plants for increasing efficiencies and improving prioritization, according to an OC news release on July 19.

The company said advanced technology, including smart glasses software and point cloud cameras, were deployed, making it possible. The technology allows a remote user to virtually walk a plant and assess equipment positioning and safety opportunities.

“Owens Corning is focused on safety and efficiency, and we have a continuous drive to provide excellent service to our customers,” said Gunner Smith, president of Owens Corning Roofing. “This technology solution illustrates how innovation can help promote long-term sustainable improvements in our plants; we’re very proud to be recognized externally for this effort.”
