In an announcement, the Roofing Alliance, the nonprofit arm of the National Roofing Contractors Association, named Columbus, Ohio-based The Durable Slate Co. as its newest Governor Level member, giving the company an outlet to help shape important initiatives for improving the roofing industry.

“John Chan and I feel very grateful for all the great opportunities and experiences that we have had from our years in the roofing industry,” Gary Howes, COO of The Durable Slate Co., said in the statement. “We both feel that we have a responsibility and moral obligation to give back to this industry so it can continue to create greater opportunities for current and future generations.”

Howes’s statement touched on his objective to extend the industry’s outreach programming, helping backstop roofing’s ongoing labor shortage.

“We want the roofing industry to be widely recognized and well known as a professional and viable career path for anyone who seeks it,” Howes said.

The Roofing Alliance statement describes its members as among the industry's best and brightest roofing professionals. Together, it says, they select and provide oversight of programs and funding for progressive research that shapes, improves, and advances the roofing industry in four key areas: education and training, technology, sustainability and philanthropy.

“Member participation is vital within the Roofing Alliance, and much of the organization’s strength comes from its broad base of supportive contributors,” said Executive Director Alison L. LaValley, CAE. “The roofing industry has a wonderful history of generosity, and for roofing professionals who would like to be involved in giving back and securing the future excellence of the roofing industry, the Roofing Alliance provides the perfect opportunity to collaborate, commit and contribute on multiple levels.”
