PARSIPPANY, N.J. — GAF announced a commitment to improving its environmental footprint through a set of planet goals. The GAF 2030 Planet Goals align with the 2030 UN Sustainable development goals and focus on operational improvements, product transparency, and the introduction of circularity in the asphaltic shingle industry, assessing and addressing the long-term impact of GAF’s business on the health of the planet.

“As industry leaders, we have a responsibility to use our expertise and resources to make a positive impact on our communities and our planet, which is why we’ve set these ambitious goals,” said Jim Schnepper, CEO of GAF. “We are making strategic investments to achieve those goals and, ultimately, to leave the planet better than we found it for our children — and their children.”

The GAF 2021 Social Impact Report showcases the important progress already achieved toward creating a more sustainable future, and details how GAF works to make a positive difference as neighbors and partners in its communities. The GAF 2030 Planet Goals include:

  • Drive product circularity in the North American roofing industry: GAF will divert 1 million tons of roofing materials from landfills each year and integrate recycled asphalt shingle content into all of its shingle products by 2030.
  • Divert operational waste: GAF will achieve an 80% waste diversion rate across all manufacturing facilities. The company will recycle 100% of TPO/shingle scrap as a result of the manufacturing process, and also retain, recycle or reuse 100% of fiberglass mat scraps and cores.
  • Reduce carbon emissions: The company will reduce embodied carbon across its product portfolio through manufacturing and operations efforts and will also work to reduce operational carbon in buildings and communities through its products, services and expertise.
  • Increase and expand product transparency and green portfolio offerings: GAF will work to achieve Environmental Product Declarations for 100% of its core product portfolio and conduct product life cycle assessments on all GAF products. In partnership with GAF Energy, the companies will generate 2.5 gigawatts of power from solar roofs.
