Chilling Out: Hawaii’s Largest Craft Brewery Keeps Cool With Insulated Panels

Touted as “Hawaii’s number-one craft beer,” the award-winning Maui Brewing Company expanded to a brand-new 42,000-square-foot facility in order to meet its overwhelming demand. Just a few months shy of a decade of brewing, the company aimed to construct a new facility that would not only help meet the demand, but would do so in a stylish and environmentally sustainable manner that would be consistent with the brand it has built over the past 10 years.

Opened in 2005, Maui Brewing Company has always taken pride in its beer being 100 percent brewed in Hawaii. Even the cans and labels have a local presence, as the company called on local Maui artists to add to that homebrewed vibe. This thought process carried over with the design and development of the new facility, embracing a modern take on traditional Hawaiian architecture. Kingspan’s KingZip insulated standing seam roof system was an integral part in realizing both the design and environmental sustainability the company desired.

The KingZip insulated standing seam roof panels allowed installers to trim to fit as the KingZip Seam navigated valley gutters, and even a roof cricket, across multiple level changes from peaks high to low. With various pieces of equipment (including HVAC units and exhausts) needing to penetrate the roof, the owner found that KingZip made sealing around these protrusions simple and worry free.

In addition to making great beer, Maui Brewing Company also expresses a passion for energy efficiency, limiting its carbon footprint and sustainability as evident by the solar-powered lights and electric vehicle chargers located in its parking lot. To meet its sustainability and energy-efficiency expectations, 300GS Granitstone exterior wall panels and 300 Series interior wall panels were used because of their high R-value, which reduces thermal bridging and creates the best thermal envelope.

Another big reason the company utilized Kingspan IMPs is the fact that they lend themselves well toward the future needs of the company. The brewery kept an acre free to expand on its current location, and the 300 Series panels, both interior and exterior, were incorporated because they are much easier to remove than the concrete walls and metal roofing alternative. They also contain a substantial amount of recycled content, and the panels themselves are recyclable, which is consistent with the company’s commitment to keeping sustainability at the forefront of all business decisions.

When asked about using Kingspan Insulated Panels in the future, Maui Brewing Company Founder Garrett Marrero said, “I’m stoked on my roof and can’t think of a better product. Our next building will certainly be KingZip as well.” And with the before mentioned expansion forthcoming in the future, picking a design material for the project won’t be one of his concerns.

Since the design is a multifaceted facility including a brewpub (where locals can gather to eat and sample the beer), a retail shop, offices and production brewery, aesthetics were also an important factor in the construction.

“Traditional standing seam roof with insulation just never looks good and carries a lower R-value than we found with KingZip,” Marrero said. “When you look up at the ceiling the finish is clean, white metal.” And with all of the previously mentioned equipment spread throughout the facility and through the roof, it could have been a real challenge to navigate and still maintain the value of appearance.

The list of benefits from the Kingspan roof and walls installed run nearly as long as the list of cold beers Maui Brewing has on tap. The ease of installation of Kingspan’s wall and roof panel systems was a critical factor in reducing construction time as well.

Marrero recalled, “Over 40,000 square feet was installed with gutters, downspouts, etc. in 3.5 weeks, which helped us gain back lost time on the schedule.” The founder went on to speak on how the company chose Kingspan because, “they go down in far less time than comparable metal roofing.” Speed of build is very important in any industry, but as Maui Brewing continues to grow, eliminating delays was vital. As evident from its recent partnership as the Hawaii Airlines official craft beer and its international distribution that is quickly growing, the company will need its new facility to meet those demands. The new facility is projected to double the company’s current production capacity.

In addition to build speed, it’s hard to express the benefits of the KingZip roof panels, 300GS Granitstone exterior walls and 300 Series interior walls without bringing everything back to local talk — specifically speaking, the climate. As Marrero describes it, “Kingspan was a natural choice, as we’ve relied upon their cooler panel materials in the past. Without insulation on roofing in Hawaii, the building heats up tremendously.” Since Maui Brewing takes pride in delivering cold beer, temperature control is a very valuable amenity.

The implementation of Kingspan panels was a big success for the Maui Brewing Company. Marrero best defined the benefits on what attracted the company to utilizing Kingspan’s roofs and walls as, “Higher insulation R-value leading to lower cooling costs, longer life, lower maintenance and fast install.” It was the perfect marriage for a local brewing company that is quickly expanding, as it distributes to four countries and counting.
