U.S. Senator Addresses Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association

April 21, 2010
North Carolina Senator Richard Burr addressed members of the Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA) at its annual conference held in Charlotte, N.C. Sen. Burr spoke during the association’s luncheon for board members after being introduced by RCMA consultant Craig Brightup, an original Team Burr volunteer from the Senator’s first successful run for Congress in 1994.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - North Carolina Senator Richard Burr addressed members of the Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA) at its annual conference held in Charlotte, N.C. Sen. Burr spoke during the association’s luncheon for board members after being introduced by RCMA consultant Craig Brightup, an original Team Burr volunteer from the Senator’s first successful run for Congress in 1994.

For over an hour, the Senator spoke and fielded questions on issues ranging from the country’s energy policy and climate change proposals, to the growing national debt and healthcare.

RCMA members were particularly pleased when Burr expressed his support for S. 3183, legislation introduced in Congress to clarify the homeowner energy-efficiency tax credit for roofing. The bill is a major step forward in RCMA-led efforts to correct unclear language and end confusion within the existing law that has caused the IRS to erroneously declare many asphalt products ineligible for this tax credit for roofing.

Burr’s interest in RCMA stems from his work on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Among its mandates, this committee maintains oversight and legislative responsibilities for new technologies research and development, commercialization of new technologies including solar energy systems, and Federal energy conservation programs. Burr was elected to the Senate in 2005, before which he served in the House of Representatives since 1994.

The Senator’s attendance marks the second time that an elected political official has attended RCMA’s annual conference and engaged its members. Last October, Congressman Russ Carnahan of Missouri was a featured speaker and demonstrated great interest in the industry’s products.

RCMA is the national trade association representing the manufacturers of cold-applied coatings and cements used for roofing and waterproofing, as well as the suppliers of products, equipment, and services to and for the industry. Founded in 1983, RCMA is dedicated to advancing product technology and to ensuring an ongoing supply of quality energy-efficient materials to meet the needs of contractors, consumers and the environment. RCMA is recognized as the premier association in the roof coatings manufacturing and supply industry, and currently boasts more than 70 member companies.
