WAUKESHA, Wis. - Metal-Era Inc. helped Virginia Tech place first in two categories at the U.S. Department of Energy's annual Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. To encourage innovation in roofing technology and energy efficiency, Metal-Era donated 144 linear feet of bone white Anchor-Tite Fascia to the Virginia Tech team. The product was recommended to the team by their membrane manufacturer, Acrylife of Wytheville, Va., and its local specifier.

"I like the profile, the snap-on cover and the easy installation," said Joe Wheeler, the project coordinator and professor of architecture at Virginia Tech. "It's a smart design because the attachment doesn't go through the membrane."

According to the rules of the competition, the building materials had to be installed by the team itself. Despite never installing a roof edge before, engineering student Brett Moss and his teammate finished in a day without any mishaps.

Virginia Tech won first place in the Architecture and Dwelling categories.
