GAF Materials Corp., Wayne, N.J., announces that its shingle product lines (Sovereign Series three-tabs, and Timberline Series laminates) have received the EnergyStar label on white shingles. These products exceed the requirements set by the EPA for solar reflectance of steep-slope roofing materials. EnergyStar is a program sponsored by the EPA that labels energy-efficient products that help lower energy costs. White shingles are “opaque” to solar radiation, which means that limited solar radiation is transmitted through the roof. The result is lower energy costs to heat or cool the building on an annual basis. With the current emphasis on energy conservation, builders and contractors can now provide interested property owners with additional energy-saving roofing options.
