A Texas roofer was sentenced to five years of community supervision and ordered to repay $64,000 after pleading guilty in a case involving unnecessary roof repairs sold to a 71-year-old homeowner.

Levy Aaron Lee, 33, of Van, Texas, pleaded guilty to financial abuse of an elderly person involving $30,000 or more but less than $150,000, a second-degree felony under Texas law.

Smith County court records show Lee was indicted June 4 in the 7th Judicial District Court. The docket lists an Aug. 3 pretrial/plea hearing at which a plea was entered. On Aug. 27, District Judge Kerry Russell formally recorded Lee's guilty plea and sentenced him to five years of community supervision, 240 hours of community service and $64,000 in restitution.

According to an arrest affidavit previously reported by KLTV, Lee and another man approached the homeowner and told her the roof was unstable. The woman paid them six checks and $14,000 in cash, totaling $64,000.

Investigators alleged the men instead caused damage themselves and then poorly covered it with roughly $1,800 worth of paint, roofing materials and uneven plywood.Contractors who later inspected the property said the roof had not required the repairs before the damage and estimated the homeowner could have purchased approximately four replacement roofs for what she paid, according to KLTV.

At sentencing, Lee was also ordered to repay the victim in installments of $1,300 per month, complete a theft-intervention class, earn a GED within a year and write an apology letter, according to local reporting from the hearing.
