The initiative began when CEO Hillary McPartlon was cleaning the company’s warehouse and discovered a collection of leftover materials that could not easily be used on future roofing jobs. 

“By reusing and recycling these scraps, we keep valuable materials out of landfills,” McPartlon said. “For us, it’s the perfect way to protect the planet while giving back to the community and the animals we love.”

McPartlon developed the designs, and members of the company’s roofing crews brought them to life, often adding their own architectural details and creative touches. Some of the completed doghouses resemble the distinctive residential architecture found throughout Santa Fe.

It is the second time the company has organized the project. During its first effort, McPartlon Roofing gave the structures away at a home show. This year, the contractor expanded the program by offering the custom creations through raffles and bidding, with proceeds benefiting local animal shelters, pet rescues and organizations that care for feral cats.

The contractor has also offered leftover roofing products to residents interested in building shelters for their own pets. One local family collected shingles and underlayment from the contractor so a 10-year-old child could build a doghouse with his grandfather.

The projects provide employees with an opportunity to apply their roofing skills on a smaller and more creative scale while supporting organizations in their community. The company said its entire team has embraced the effort and takes pride in crafting each structure.

Animals are also familiar visitors at McPartlon Roofing’s offices and facilities. Employees regularly bring dogs and cats to work, and goats have also made appearances. One crew member is currently applying his construction skills to a small stable for his pony.
