Action Roofing and the Miami Dolphins partnered for a second consecutive year to provide a free roof to a South Florida military veteran, surprising Homestead, Fla., resident Alex Silva Jr. and his family on Jan. 23.
Silva, a disabled Army veteran, was selected through a nomination by the Wounded Warrior Project, a Dolphins-affiliated nonprofit. The roof replacement, valued at about $35,000, includes removal of the existing roof, structural repairs and installation of a new roofing system at no cost to the family.
Miami Dolphins alumni Troy Drayton and team cheerleaders joined representatives from both organizations during the announcement at Silva’s home. Silva selected the color of the new roof before work began.
Silva served six years in the Army and suffers from Common Variable Immunodeficiency, a condition that requires biweekly in-home plasma treatments. According to organizers, leaks in the home’s roof had created unsafe living conditions that aggravated his medical needs.
“A sound roof is essential for health and safety, especially for someone with Mr. Silva’s medical needs,” said Bruce Bessire, chief operating officer of Peak Roofing Partners, Action Roofing’s parent company. “We’re proud to partner with the Miami Dolphins again to support a veteran who has given so much.”
Alvin Daniels, Action Roofing’s director of operations, said the project reflects a broader commitment to veterans across Florida.
“It is an honor to connect with Alex and his family and help provide a safe home environment,” Daniels said.
Despite ongoing health challenges, Silva remains active in veteran support efforts alongside his father, a former Marine.
