The ongoing supply issues facing the construction industry may be further complicated by human rights violations in China, warns Trent Cotney, partner at Adams and Reese.

Following a law that was passed last year, the United States recently banned all goods produced in China’s western Xinjiang region due to concerns of human rights abuses, including people being placed in internment camps. The ban includes includes all goods, whether they were partially or wholly produced in the region, as they may have been created using forced labor.

“There’s going to be some construction-based products, specifically silica,” Cotney said.

The discussion then turns toward national concerns, mainly with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, declaring the constitutional right to abortion no longer exists. The decision means abortion rights are either rolled back in multiple states or are currently in flux. Cotney discusses what business owners should do in order to properly handle their healthcare policies.

“I anticipate there are going to be more decisions along these lines coming from the Supreme Court in the next few months,” Cotney said.
