ARMA Announces Annual Accident Prevention Contest Winners for 2009

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) announced the results of the Association’s prestigious Accident Prevention Contest. In 2009, 98 facilities participated in the contest. 

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) announced the results of the Association’s prestigious Accident Prevention Contest. In 2009, 98 facilities participated in the contest. ARMA’s top award is the ARMA President’s Award, presented to the top ranked company within its category (determined by number of labor hours worked). This year’s President’s Award winners are:

Group A: Over 300,000 Labor Hours Worked Per Year
GAF Materials Corporation, Savannah, Ga.

Group B: 200,000 to 300,000 Labor Hours Worked Per Year
GAF Materials Corporation, Myerstown, Pa.

Group C: 100,000 to 200,000 Labor Hours worked Per Year
Owens Corning, Brookville, Ind.

Group D: Under 100,000 Labor Hours Worked Per Year
Tarco, Greencastle, Pa.

In 2007, ARMA introduced the ARMA Award of Excellence, which is presented to each category winner demonstrating the lowest 3-year averaged ARMA Index. The 2009 Award of Excellence winners are:

Group A: Over 300,000 Labor Hours Worked Per Year
GAF Materials Corporation, Savannah, Ga.

Group B: 200,000 to 300,000 Labor Hours Worked Per Year
GAF Materials Corporation, Fontana, Calif.

Group C: 100,000 to 200,000 Labor Hours worked Per Year
CertainTeed Corporation, Birmingham, Ala.
GAF Materials Corporation, Chester, S.C.
Owens Corning, Portland, Ore.

Group D: Under 100,000 Labor Hours Worked Per Year

Owens Corning (Asphalt): Atlanta, Ga.; Houston, Texas; Jacksonville, Fla.; Kearney, N.J.; Minneapolis, Minn.; and Oklahoma City, Okla.
TAMKO Building Products, Ennis, Texas

To better quantify achievement in the safety arena in 2007, ARMA set a new benchmark for its Certificate of Achievement by requiring that a facility needed to lower its ARMA index by 25 percent from the prior year.

The following 38 facilities will receive a Certificate of Achievement for their improvements in 2009 over 2008 (These appear in alphabetical order by company):

Atlas Roofing Corporation: Ardmore, Okla.; Daingerfield, Texas; Hampton, Ga.; and Meridian, Miss.
Building Products of Canada: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and Joliette, Quebec, Canada
CertainTeed Corporation: Fremont, Calif.; Milan, Ohio; Oxford, N.C.; Peachtree City, Ga.; Shakopee, Minn.; and Shreveport, La.
Firestone Building Products Co.: Beech Grove, Ind.
GAF Materials Corporation: Baltimore, Md.; Ennis, Texas; Fontana, Calif.; Fresno, Calif.; Mt. Vernon, Ind.; Myerstown, Pa.; Nashville, Tenn.; North Branch, N.J.; Savannah, Ga.; Shafter, Calif. (Shingle); Tampa, Fla.; and Tuscaloosa, Ala.. IKO: Kankakee, Ill.
Owens Corning: Atlanta, Ga.; Irving, Texas; Minneapolis, Minn.; and Summit, Ill.
TAMKO Building Products: Columbus, Kan.; Frederick, Md.; Green Cove Springs, Fla.;
 Joplin, Mo. – High; Joplin, Mo.; Naples, Texas; Phillipsburg, Kan.; and Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Finally, 39 facilities received the ARMA Perfect Index Awards that shows a facility had no lost and restricted workdays and no reportable OSHA incidents. These facilities include:

CertainTeed Corporation: Birmingham, Ala.; Fremont, Calif.; and Wilmington, Calif.
Firestone Building Products Co.; Beech Grove, Ind.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) is the North American trade association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of bituminous-based residential and commercial fiberglass and organic asphalt shingle roofing products, roll roofing, built-up (BUR) roofing systems, and modified bitumen roofing systems.
