The Home Depot Foundation invertirá millones en respuesta a desastres naturales

Fondos apoyarán comunidades vulnerables.

The Home Depot Foundation anunció una inversión de más de $5.5 millones para apoyar proyectos de preparación, respuesta y reconstrucción tras desastres naturales durante la temporada de huracanes.

La organización informó que, sumando los $3 millones destinados previamente a incendios forestales en el sur de California, el apoyo total relacionado con desastres naturales para este año alcanza los $8.5 millones.

Los recursos serán utilizados en comunidades afectadas por huracanes, incendios, tornados e inundaciones en lugares como Georgia, Luisiana, Florida, Carolina del Norte, Iowa, California, Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes de Estados Unidos.

Entre los proyectos anunciados se encuentran reparaciones y rehabilitación de viviendas en Augusta, Georgia; Lafayette, Luisiana; y Planada, California, además de nuevas construcciones en California y el noroeste de Iowa a través de Habitat for Humanity International.

La organización Team Rubicon informó que utilizará parte de los fondos para capacitar a 8,000 voluntarios y completar 100 reparaciones de viviendas dañadas por desastres anteriores.

Por su parte, Operation Blessing desarrollará un remolque móvil llamado “energy hub”, donde las comunidades podrán acceder a WiFi y cargar herramientas eléctricas y dispositivos durante emergencias.

Inspiritus abrirá un almacén en el sur de Georgia y ampliará la capacitación de voluntarios para labores de respuesta inmediata y recuperación a largo plazo.

La fundación también apoyará el mantenimiento de un complejo habitacional de 450 unidades para familias desplazadas por los incendios de Lahaina, Hawaii, ocurridos en 2023. Además, colaborará en el desarrollo del programa “Strong Homes” junto con la Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, enfocado en prácticas de construcción resiliente y estándares FORTIFIED Gold.

Parte de los fondos adicionales serán destinados a organizaciones como American Red Cross, Convoy of Hope, World Central Kitchen y Appalachia Service Project.

Según la fundación, esto incluirá apoyo para la reconstrucción de viviendas de víctimas del huracán Helene en el área de Asheville, Carolina del Norte, así como distribución de alimentos, refugios y suministros de emergencia.
