GAF, Habitat Bring Fortified Roofs to Alabama
Program expands storm-resilient roofing access

GAF has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa to expand access to fortified roofing systems for homeowners across West Alabama, beginning with a roof replacement for a local veteran.
The first project provided a new roof for Evelyn Smith, a retired Army veteran in Tuscaloosa whose home needed replacement after years of wear.
“I am so grateful and excited about my new roof,” Smith said. “I just can’t express how happy I am that I was chosen.”
The effort includes collaboration with Strengthen Alabama Homes, which offers grants to eligible homeowners. GAF donated materials for the project, and a local contractor provided installation.
The roofing system follows standards developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety to improve protection against severe weather.
“A fortified roof can make a meaningful difference for homeowners,” said Mike Thomas of GAF. “Expanding access to that level of protection is critical in communities that frequently face severe weather.”
Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa is administering applications for income-eligible homeowners in Tuscaloosa, Pickens, Hale and Greene counties.
“GAF has been a terrific partner,” said Executive Director Ellen Potts. “Their support allows us to serve more homeowners in need.”
