Florida Home Wins MRA’s Best U.S. Residential Metal Roofing Project Award For Hurricane Preparedness

By Roofing Contractor Staff
A home on Florida’s Gulf Coast was selected as the winner of the Metal Roofing Alliance’s quarterly “Best Residential Roofing Project.”

The Metal Roofing Alliance’s quarterly “Best Residential Roofing Project” winner features a Nokomis, Fla. home where a new EDCO metal roof outperformed concrete tile in the face of a Category 3 hurricane.

The Metal Roofing Alliance’s quarterly winner of the trade group’s “Best Residential Roofing Project” competition highlights what the MRA described as a “lightweight contender that delivers performance far exceeding expectations, surpassing an industry heavyweight.”

The 6,000-square-foot home is located on Dona Bay in Nokomis, Fla., about 72 miles south of Tampa on the state’s West Coast.

The MRA says the home’s owners were searching for a long-term, durable roofing solution to survive the direct blows the home sustained during Hurricane Ian in 2022.

The old, heavy concrete tile roof had suffered major damage, so the homeowners decided to replace it with a metal roof in slate style from EDCO Products, installed by Metal Roofing Headquarters, also known as MRHQ Roofs.

The MRA says the new metal roof offers curb appeal, superior wind resistance, strong and long-lasting performance, and minimal long-term maintenance requirements.

“It’s a literal fortress for your home,” said Jonathan Boyer, co-owner and director of operations for Metal Roofing Headquarters.

Metal is also much lighter weight, an advantage that came into the spotlight when removing the old concrete tile roof.

Due to the old material's weight, Metal Roofing Headquarters exercised caution to avoid damaging the pool, landscape, and driveway during removal, implementing a chute system for dump trucks making frequent trips to the concrete recycling facility, which added hassle, expense, and time to the process.

How Did it Fare?

Could metal really outperform such a heavyweight when it came to severe storms? The proof is in performance.

The organization says the previous tile roof was badly damaged by Hurricane Ian, a Category 3 hurricane, in 2022 and replaced with metal. In 2024, the home was directly hit by Category 3 Hurricane Milton: the new metal roof suffered zero damage.

“Premium metal roofs come with a long list of obvious benefits, like beauty, strength, longevity, return on investment, and environmental friendliness,” explained Stefan Boyer, co-owner and marketing director for Metal Roofing Headquarters.

“At the end of the day, the peace of mind you get from knowing your home and family will be protected for 50-plus years is probably the biggest benefit of all,” he added.

From the homeowner’s perspective, the MRA says they love their new metal roof. Even though concrete tile is traditionally considered a high-end roofing material, they view their new metal shingle roof as an upgrade.

Next Up

With this competition phase closed, the search is on for MRA’s Best Residential Metal Roofing project for the first quarter of 2025.

Open to U.S. and Canadian homeowners, contractors, installers and manufacturers, MRA officials partner with Metal Coffee Shop to select an outstanding metal roofing project based on entries received each quarter.

Honors are awarded for project appearance, performance and originality/use of materials. Interested participants can find information about how to enter and competition rules online HERE.
