New IKO ‘Cool Roof,’ Reflective Roofing Shingles Unveiled at Western Roofing Expo 2016

Cambridge Cool Colors
June 17, 2016
KANKAKEE, Ill. — IKO’s most popular portfolio of residential roofing shingles has expanded to include IKO Cambridge™ Cool Colors, an advanced line of architectural laminate shingles that are engineered to meet the California Energy Commission Building Standards Code, Title 24.

In the state of California, Title 24 energy standards require all residential and non-residential buildings to employ “cool roofs,” or those with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance properties.

The latest addition to IKO’s portfolio of residential roofing product solutions, IKO Cambridge Cool Colors feature a shingle coating embedded with special granules that reflect a greater amount of solar energy than standard roofing shingles. This high-reflectance technology allows less solar radiation, or heat, to enter the home through the attic and also allows absorbed radiation to be released back into the atmosphere.

As a result, IKO Cambridge Cool Colors shingles help to lower the roof’s temperature on sunny days throughout the year, potentially reducing overall cooling loads on the home and energy costs associated with air conditioning.

In fact, studies from the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) have shown typical cooling energy savings of 10 to 30 percent associated with cool roofs. However, the specific energy savings can depend on various factors, including geography, climate, utility rates and type of construction, among others.

“West coast roofing contractors need to be especially mindful of Title 24 standards to ensure both their businesses and customers are in compliance,” said Mark Okland, IKO's product development manager. “With IKO Cambridge Cool Colors, contractors can achieve compliance with Title 24 and continue to enjoy the durability and ease-of-installation benefits they’ve come to expect from our best-selling Cambridge Collection shingles — while also passing on potential energy savings, and an attractive roof, to their customers.”

IKO Cambridge Cool Colors also deliver an eye-catching, dimensional roofscape for boosted curb appeal. They are offered in four dramatic color options, including the popular Dual Grey as well as three new colors: Arctic White, Desert Gold and Valley Oak. All four colors will be available throughout California with additional limited availability in surrounding West Coast states, while Dual Grey will continue to be offered nationwide.

IKO Cambridge Cool Colors are also formulated in IKO’s special “Advantage” size — which provides 12 percent larger exposure than most competitors’ comparable products. Because of their bigger profile, installation of Cambridge shingles not only is faster and easier for contractors but also creates a dramatic finished appearance and lowers job costs associated with excess materials and labor.

Further, matching IKO Ultra HP™ high-profile hip and ridge cap shingles are also available to protect and accentuate the roof line for the perfect finishing touch. Along with Cambridge shingles, they are part of IKO’s PRO4™ roofing components system, which includes four multi-layered components that protect vulnerable areas of the roof to provide homeowners with effective protection against the elements and total peace of mind.
