Product Focus: Roofing Underlayments

July 23, 2015

Synthetic Underlayment • Alpha Pro Tech

Alpha Pro Tech Engineered Products Inc. has launched its latest synthetic roof underlayment with the addition of REX TECHNO SB: a coated-woven polypropylene fabric that also has a non-woven polypropylene laminated to the top surface. The unique features include a multi-filament strand woven into the product that gives an additional slip-resistant feature. The non-woven fabric is treated so that moisture won’t stand on the top of the surface but will disappear, eliminating the fear of slippage. The rolls come 48 inches wide and 10 squares per roll. For more information, visit www.alphaprotech.com.

High-Temperature Underlayment • Atlas Roofing

WeatherMaster® TU Ultra SE Peel & Stick SBS Reinforced Underlayment is a high-temperature, self-adhering underlayment designed for tile and slate roofing systems. It’s produced with a blend of modified asphalt and woven polyester. The top surface bonds with foam adhesives used in roof-tile installation and will hold up well under stacked tiles without slippage or damage to the membrane surface. Because safety matters are so important, it’s designed to give roofers excellent traction during installation of a tile or slate roofing system. For more information, visit www.atlasroofing.com/roof-underlayment/weathermaster-tu-ultra-se.

Wood-Roofing Underlayment • Benjamin Obdyke

Benjamin Obdyke’s Cedar Breather® protects the beauty and life of wood roofing by providing a space for continuous airflow between the solid roof deck and shingles or shakes. The underlayment product is fire resistant (ASTM E108-tested), provides cushioning during severe hail, works to prevent thermal cupping and warping, and reduces potential rotting. Its patented, three-dimensional design allows continuous airflow between the solid roof deck and shingles, and creates a space to help eliminate excess moisture, allowing the bottom of the singles to dry. Installation doesn’t require any special tools and eliminates the need for furring strips. For more information, visit www.benjaminobdyke.com.

Metal-Roofing Underlayment • CertainTeed

MetaLayment™ provides increased waterproofing protection for metal, shingle and tile roofs. It features installer-friendly features, including a slip-resistant surface, split-release backing for easy removal and exceptional elasticity for easy handling at low temperatures. With its self-adhering design, the underlayment is easy to adjust during application, ensuring a perfect installation for contractors and installers. MetaLayment resists extreme temperatures (up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit), making it ideal for use under metal-roofing panels. In addition, MetaLayment has a 10-year warranty and meets ASTM D1970 for self-adhering polymer modified bituminous sheet materials. For more information visit www.certainteed.com.

Metal-Roof Underlayment • Cosella-Dörken

Let precious metal breathe easier with DELTA®-TRELA from Cosella-Dörken. This is a vapor-permeable, ventilating and water-resistive membrane for roofs and walls that improves performance of high-quality metal cladding. Roofs like standing seam metal, copper or zinc are selected for their beauty and their longevity. Including this underlayment in the design could help attain that longevity by draining moisture to prevent corrosion, creating a permanent ventilation space, allowing for thermal expansion and contraction, and reducing precipitation-impact noise by up to 15 dB. For more information, visit www.cosella-dorken.com.

Shingle Underlayment • GAF

Tiger Paw shingle underlayment has a specially designed surface that helps provide excellent walkability for installers. It also provides at least 600 percent greater tear strength and up to 147 percent higher nail pull-through strength than standard #30 felt. The convenient 10-square, 48-inch-wide roll installs up to 33 percent faster than a roll of #30 felt and is 33 percent lighter. For more information, visit www.gaf.com.

Self-Adhered Underlayment • Grace

Grace Ice & Water Shield® is recognized as a premium-performance, self-adhered roofing underlayment, protecting roofs since 1978. Designed for various types of roofs and climates, it offers best-in-class roof-leak protection against wind-driven rain and ice dams. It features a watertight bond with the roof deck, high-quality seal around roofing fasteners and forms superior laps. The underlayment has an embedded Ripcord® Split Release on Demand, making it easier to waterproof detail areas such as valleys, chimneys and roof-to-wall transitions. Many signature projects around the world rely on this high-performing underlayment for premium roofing protection. For more information, visit www.grace.com.

Sloped-Roof Underlayment • InterWrap

Titanium® UDL25 is a highly engineered, mechanically attached, coated woven synthetic roofing underlayment for sloped roofs. Used in conjunction with Titanium PSU30 self-adhered underlayment, it’s designed to offer the sloped-roofing industry a truly revolutionary system of safety and security. The underlayment’s advanced polymers combine to deliver a unique gray, synthetic roofing underlayment that can be used under all types of primary roofing materials. Gray technology provides for a cooler working surface during installations and up to a six-month UV exposure. It possesses patented, slip-resistant Sure-Foot® nodular walking-surface technology that allows for easier steep-slope walkability, even in wet or dusty conditions. For more information, visit www.interwrap.com.

Synthetic Underlayment • Owens Corning

ProArmor™ Fusion Back Coating Technology™ is paired with an industrial non-woven surface to create a stable walking surface, reduce sliding against the roof deck and stretching and tearing around fasteners that could lead to water infiltration. The underlayment repels moisture and provides protection against water infiltration. The product is available in 10-square, 42-inch lightweight rolls for easy installation and supported by a 10-year limited warranty*. ProArmor underlayment is a component of the Owens Corning® Total Protection Roofing System™^ providing assurance that all roofing components are working together to help increase the performance of the roof. For more information, visit www.owenscorning.com/roofing.

* See ProArmor underlayment warranty for complete details, limitations and requirements.

^Excludes non-Owens Corning roofing products such as flashing, fasteners and wood decking.

Waterproofing Membrane • MFM Building Products

MFM ShingleStarter™ is a self-adhering, self-sealing waterproofing membrane that eliminates the need to cut shingle tabs, and is designed to save contractors valuable time, material and labor costs. The membrane aggressively bonds to the roofing substrate and features a sealing strip to prevent shingle uplift at the roof edge. ShingleStarter is a 50-mil granulated product with a roll size of 7.2 inches by 33.5 feet. The product meets ASTM D 1970, Florida Building Code FL 11842.1, ICC-ES ESR 1737 and is Miami-Dade County approved. For more information, visit www.mfmbp.com.
