IRVINE, Calif. — Versico Roofing Systems would like to congratulate the University of Southern California’s 2013 Solar Decathlon Team. The Solar Decathlon is an international contest that challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered homes that are attractive, affordable and energy efficient. Versico was a proud sponsor of USC’s team, which earned a top-10 finish in the biennial competition.

Versico, a longtime advocate of sustainable roofing materials and systems, chose to sponsor a Solar Decathlon team to demonstrate a long-term commitment to the continuing development of green building products and design practices. “Participants in contests like these will develop the technologies used in the next generation of energy-efficient buildings,” Versico’s Marketing Manager David French said. “Versico would like to commend USC’s team on their hard work and success in the 2013 Solar Decathlon.”

The award-winning Solar Decathlon program, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy and first held in 2002, is meant to educate its participants and the general public about opportunities to save money and protect the environment through clean-energy products and eco-friendly design. The winner of the competition is the team that designs the house which best combines consumer appeal, design quality and reasonable cost with optimum energy production and efficiency

Visitors can tour the houses to learn how energy-efficient products and solutions can work in their own homes. The last Solar decathlon, held in 2011, saw 350,000 house visits over the course of 10 days.
