VALLEY FORGE, Pa. - CertainTeed Corporation is offering updates to the industry’s most comprehensive shingle roofing installation manual, the Shingle Applicator’s Manual (SAM). Written for roofing professionals, SAM is a fully illustrated manual, with the most-up-to-date shingle roofing installation instructions and tips.

The ninth edition SAM contains new information on ventilation, Flintlastic(R) SA roof systems and tips for installing WinterGuard(TM) over existing waterproofing shingle underlayments. It also contains new and updated flashing diagrams, an alternative method to install open metal valleys with laminate shingles, and a newly approved method for installing Landmark(TM) Series shingles. The updated manual also reflects product line revisions, including the addition of Swiftstart(TM) starter shingles.

“This manual is the roofing industry’s most authoritative guide to proper steep-slope roof system installation,” said Jay Butch, senior marketing manager of contractor programs for CertainTeed Roofing.

Contractors can use SAM as a training tool for installers, a reference guide and a sales aid to demonstrate to customers that they install a roof “according to the book.” In addition, contractors can earn the Master Shingle Applicator qualification from CertainTeed when they pass the test associated with SAM. Marty Condrey, owner of Marty’s Custom Roofing in Fredericksburg, Va., said he uses SAM as a training tool for his installers. “I like how the manual goes into detail with specifications on each product line - from roof deck thickness to nailing patterns,” Condrey said. “My company’s productivity has increased because all my installers know what is expected on each job. SAM helps me drive that into each installer’s head.”

SAM is published in both English and Spanish, and a companion DVD is available in both languages. For more information, call 800-233-8990.
