VALLEY FORGE, Pa. - CertainTeed Corp. was recently honored with a Mayor’s Commendation certificate at a San Jose, Calif., city council ceremony for the company’s contribution to a community outreach project. John Ficarra, territory manager for CertainTeed Roofing, was on hand to accept the honor.

CertainTeed earned its recognition by donating CertainTeed Landmark™ TL Ultimate luxury shingles and Mountain Ridge high-profile hip and ridge accessory to Beautiful Day Better Homes, a community outreach program created by Beautiful Day, a faith-based volunteer organization headquartered in San Jose. Making its debut in 2006, Beautiful Day Better Homes volunteers partnered with the San Jose Code Enforcement Department to assist homeowners who had been cited for blight ordinances, regarding visible property neglect issues, but were either too elderly or disabled to comply.

The donated CertainTeed products were used to roof a new detached garage in one Better Homes project, where volunteers restored the home of a wheelchair-bound single mother in San Jose. The original garage had burned down a few years ago, and debris from the fire had never been removed from the site. The new garage is a structure the homeowner can take pride in, and the CertainTeed roof made a big difference, says Mike Bell, Director of Beautiful Day Better Homes. “We are grateful beyond words for CertainTeed’s participation in the project,” he said.
