Roofing Resiliency
Study: Hail-Resistant Roofs Could Cut Insurance Premiums 50%
Alberta research finds resilient roofing can reduce premiums and improve coverage as insurers respond to rising hail losses

Homeowners in high-risk hail areas could reduce their insurance premiums by as much as 50% by installing hail-resistant roofing and siding, according to a new study commissioned by Insurance Bureau of Canada.
The study, conducted by MNP LLP, examined hail risk, insurance costs and opportunities to improve property resilience in Alberta. It found hail can account for 30% to 68% of homeowners insurance premiums in high-risk areas. Installing hail-resistant materials may also lower deductibles, reduce coverage caps and improve access to full replacement-cost coverage for roofs.
The findings come as hail losses increase across the province. Hailstorms caused $6 billion in insured damage in Alberta during the past five years, including more than $3 billion from a 2024 Calgary storm.
The study also found a growing number of insurers are offering financial assistance to install resilient roofing and siding following a claim.
Insurance Bureau of Canada is calling for hail-resistant materials to be required in new construction in high-risk areas and for financial incentives to support resilience retrofits. The group also recommended reviving Calgary’s Resilient Roofing Rebate Program.
