Building Roofs, Building Community: TAMKO’s Lasting Commitment to Veterans and the Military

A Legacy of Service

For nearly 80 years, TAMKO built its reputation on strength, resilience, and trust—qualities that align closely with the values of the U.S. military. Many TAMKO® employees and contractors have served themselves or have family members in the armed forces. This connection fuels a culture of gratitude and drives the company’s commitment to support veteran families across the country.

A roof is more than shingles and nails; it’s safety, stability, and peace of mind. Knowing this, TAMKO participated in programs that directly impact the lives of veterans. From community-led roof replacements to nationally broadcast home renovations, these efforts are about more than materials. They are about honoring service with action.

Operation Rooftop: Community Impact, One Roof at a Time

Now in its second year, Operation Rooftop combines the winning spirit of the four-time world champion Kansas City Chiefs with TAMKO’s top-quality American manufacturing. The program honors U.S. service members by providing one winner each year with long-lasting roof protection featuring premium TAMKO® roofing materials, including Titan XT® shingles, renowned for their superior wind protection of up to 160 MPH* and Class 3 impact rating.†

The inaugural recipient of Operation Rooftop was retired Marine Corps veteran Garron Abernathy of Blue Springs, Missouri. Garron, who served two deployments in Iraq as a Motor Vehicle Operator and later led a tire shop operation to ensure the safety of his unit’s vehicles, now works as a Class A Hazmat Fuel Truck Driver. He and his fiancée raise their blended family in a home purchased with his VA loan.

After experiencing roof issues, Garron and his fiancée were saving up for repairs. Winning Operation Rooftop provided both relief and recognition.

“I am beyond grateful to TAMKO® and the Kansas City Chiefs for this incredible gift,” Garron said. “As a Marine Corps veteran, knowing that my home will be safe and secure with this new roof means everything to me and my family.”

The new roof built with Titan XT® shingles not only delivered protection, but also peace of mind. Garron reflected on the experience as a powerful reminder that the sacrifices of veterans are recognized and valued.

“As veterans, we’re wired to take care of one another, and it means so much to see that same care reflected back from the community,” Garron added. “It’s a powerful reminder that our service is appreciated, and having that recognition is something I’ll never take for granted.”

Military Makeover with Montel: A National Platform for Giving Back

TAMKO’s commitment to the military community also extends to the national stage through its partnership with Military Makeover with Montel. Hosted by veteran Montel Williams, the program renovates the homes of deserving military families, providing them with comfort and security after years of service.

In the Reeves Family season of the show, TAMKO partnered with TAMKO Pro Diamond™ Contractor ATW Roofing ‡ to provide and install a TAMKO Complete® roofing system featuring Titan XT® shingles. The project not only delivered reliable roof protection, but also highlighted the power of collaboration between TAMKO, its contractors, and the local community to honor veterans on a national platform.

Contractors at the Heart of the Mission

While TAMKO provides the shingles, it is TAMKO® Pro Certified Contractors‡—including TAMKO Pro Diamond™ and TAMKO Pro Platinum™ contractors—who make these initiatives possible. Their expertise and volunteer labor bring Operation Rooftop and Military Makeover with Montel projects to life.

By partnering with TAMKO on these efforts, contractors extend their impact beyond business—strengthening community ties and contributing to projects that recognize and honor veterans for their service. Together, TAMKO and its contractors deliver more than roofs; they deliver peace of mind and gratitude to military families.

Beyond Roofs: Building a Culture of Gratitude

TAMKO’s dedication to veterans goes far beyond the roofs it builds. With nearly 15% of its workforce made up of veterans, the company’s connection to military service is personal. That commitment extends to supporting military families through charitable giving, community initiatives, and sponsorships that shine a spotlight on those who serve.

TAMKO also encourages its employees to participate in veteran-focused volunteer opportunities. By fostering this culture of service internally, the company ensures its values resonate beyond corporate initiatives and into the daily lives of its workforce.

Why It Matters

The numbers tell one story—millions of veterans nationwide—but the personal experiences tell another. Every roof replaced and every family honored represents a powerful reminder of how businesses can step up to support those who served.

For TAMKO, these initiatives are not about publicity; they are about purpose. By focusing resources and energy on veterans, TAMKO aligns its mission of building strong, resilient homes with the resilience of those who defended the nation.

Building More Than Roofs

From the small-town streets where Operation Rooftop projects take place to the national spotlight of Military Makeover with Montel, TAMKO’s commitment to veterans continues to grow. Each initiative is a reflection of the company’s values—strength, integrity, and gratitude.

Supporting the military community isn’t just an initiative for TAMKO. It’s an extension of the company’s legacy, a promise to keep building not just roofs, but stronger communities and brighter futures for those who gave so much.
