Sustainable roofing systems can be many things, but primarily they are assemblies that provide a covering protecting a building from the elements (i.e., water, sun, cold, and heat) while minimizing their burden on the environment and conserving energy. 

 When it came time for the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso (HACEP) to replace more than half a million square feet of roofing, city officials wanted more than a quality roof system: they wanted to demonstrate their commitment to a healthy environment. 

 I had an opportunity last month to participate in a webinar with a leading roof consultant who turned my idea of roof maintenance upside down 

 It has been my privilege to work in the roofing industry for more than 36 years, starting as an estimator in 1976.  

 As part of the RoofPoint rating program for sustainable roofing systems, the Center has developed a unique approach to the selection of energy-efficient roof surfaces.
