Two of the key topics in this issue of Roofing Contractor are favorites of mine: Young Guns and Tools and Equipment.

As an editor for Roofing Contractor, I’ve always endeavored to stay neutral when it comes to partisan politics.

For years, I’ve been fond of saying the roof-contracting business is hand-to-hand combat.

Looking back on 2015, I get a sense that this has been a year of growth for the roofing industry. Yes, 2015 was a good year overall for the roofing industry, but what I’m feeling is the industry has matured. Not just growing bigger, but growing wiser and better with age.

Aluminum, lead, zinc, stainless, copper and steel make their way onto the roof as fasteners, flashings, edgings, hatches, vents, expansion joints, drains and even as the roof covering itself.

I find myself at a very interesting stage in life: hurling through my middle-60s at a pace much faster than when I went through my twenties.

Every time I speak with a roofing contractor lately, the topic of labor emerges as number one. In all my years in the roofing industry, the topic of labor has consistently been on top or near the top of the list.

The July issue of Roofing Contractor brings you up to date on many of the latest technologies performing in the roofing industry.

Building owners and managers face some tough decisions when it comes time to replace the roof on their commercial, industrial or institutional buildings.

Let’s agree: the roof-contracting business is risky.
