How to Handle and Install Metal Panels

This steep slope metal roof on Haughton Middle School in Louisiana features striking red Insulated Metal Panels that highlights the campus.

The JB Autosports headquarters building features a high-performance insulated metal roof panel with exceptional R-values along with 2-inch high standing seams for all-weather installation and performance.

Insulated metal panels were utilized on this Lafayette College retrofit project in Pennsylvania, saving costs in materials and labor, due to their single-unit composition and quick installation.

A pre-engineered structural frame was chosen to facilitate ease of installation, increasing faster build times of both roof and wall for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) training center in Hawaii.
As Insulated Metal Panels (IMPs) continue to grow in popularity, roofers with the skills to install them are in demand. The Metal Construction Association (MCA) offers installation videos and other learning tools that provide best practices for selecting and installing IMPs. These resources have been developed by MCA's IMP Council, a select group of the industry's leading IMP authorities.
IMP Installation Video Series
MCA has posted six educational videos on IMPs that you can view on their website. Detailed explanations by experts, along with animated videos, make installation crystal-clear. The series covers:
- Basic types of IMPs & their respective features and architectural uses, including roof options
- How to unload and store IMPs at construction sites
- Lifting
- Cutting
- Special tools
- Framing alignment & tolerances
- How to install vertical and horizontal IMPs
- Proper installation of roofing IMPs, including the four seam types

Two IMP Must-Reads
MCA's "IMP Visual Inspection Guide" provides visual acceptance parameters for insulated metal panels and panel systems. "Selection Guideline for Insulated Metal Panels" covers product testing and certification, production, design, and more. You can download both documents in the IMP section of MCA's Technical Resources web page.
About the Metal Construction Association
MCA brings together a diverse industry to expand the use of metal in construction through marketing, research, technology and education. Member companies gain tremendous advantages from association activities that focus on research, codes and standards, market development, and technical programs. Join the dozens of roofers who benefit from MCA membership.
