Slate Capital Group Sells O'Donnell Metal Deck & Bar Joist to Clarendon Capital
Under CEO Matt Weiss, OMD grew from one to 21 locations

Slate Capital Group announced the sale of its portfolio company, O'Donnell Metal Deck & Bar Joist (OMD) to Clarendon Capital.
Slate Capital Group, based in Baltimore, Md., partnered with management to acquire OMD in November 2020, following the planned retirement of founder Steve O'Donnell. During Slate's ownership, OMD transformed from a regional distributor into one of the nation's leading independent distributors of metal deck and steel bar joist products. The company achieved this growth through a combination of organic expansion, strategic acquisitions, and investments in operational infrastructure.
Under CEO Matt Weiss, OMD grew from one to 21 locations, combining company-operated facilities and third-party logistics sites nationwide. The company increased its workforce from eight to approximately 70 and multiplied revenue more than tenfold during the investment period. The company expanded into new markets, completed strategic acquisitions, and built a scalable operating infrastructure positioned for continued growth.
"O'Donnell Metal Deck founder and my mentor, Steve O'Donnell, built a strong business and our foundation in the industry," said Matt Weiss, CEO. "When he retired, I had a vision to grow the company, but I needed an experienced partner. Slate Capital Group believed in our goals from day one and supported us in building a leading nationwide distributor. I'm proud of our accomplishments and grateful for our partnership over the years."
"We met OMD at an ideal time in the company’s history," said Rick Corcoran, partner and co-founder of Slate Capital Group. "Steve built a great company, and Matt saw the opportunity to build upon it and create something much larger. Partnering with Matt and the team as they expanded and completed acquisitions was an honor. This investment reflects Slate's mission: partner with talented teams and support long-term growth. We're grateful for Steve and Matt's trust and excited for OMD’s future with Clarendon Capital."
Founder-owned businesses undergoing succession transitions remain a core focus for Slate Capital Group. The firm seeks to partner with management teams and business owners to preserve company legacies while providing the strategic and financial resources necessary to support long-term growth.
Raymond James served as financial advisor and Dentons LLP as legal counsel to Slate Capital Group and O'Donnell Metal Deck & Bar Joist.
