Individuals struggling with addiction and mental health issues need a safe space to receive proper care — not just figuratively, but literally, which is why roofing manufacturer GAF stepped in to assist Illinois-based nonprofit Wellness and Recovery with Maitri with new roofs.

The organization's facilities, located in Peru, Ill., will serve as an extended are facility, housing 24 individuals, as well as the home for Maitri Path to Wellness, where clinically licensed professionals offer behavioral health care to those on the path to wellness and recovery. GAF donated all of the roofing materials needed for the installation.

“By providing a local solution, our facility offers individuals the chance to access support, cultivate relationships with peers, secure employment, pursue education, and flourish within their own community,” said Kelly Jones, LCSW CADC at Maitrī Path to Wellness. “GAF’s involvement is catalyzing profound change in the lives of those on their recovery journey.”

The donation is part of GAF's social impact initiative, GAF Community Matters, which aims to make positive differences in communities by leveraging roofing expertise, resources and products. Most recently, GAF partnered with actor Anthony Mackie to help rebuild 500 homes impacted by severe weather in the Gulf Region as part of the initiative.

“GAF is dedicated to becoming a proud member and employer within the community and is excited to support the positive work happening in Peru,” said Gary Ashely, plant manager at the new Peru facility. “We strive to become an integral part of the communities in which we operate, and supporting the city and its residents is a topmost priority for GAF as it becomes a member of the community.”

GAF announced last year the building of its fifth polyiso manufacturing plant in Peru, with production set to begin on-site in 2024. According to a news release, GAF chose Peru because of its "ideal location with excellent access to service the Midwest customers and the city’s strong community values with a talented workforce."

"GAF is excited to grow its presence in the community and are confident that the Peru facility will be an immense asset to the company’s future operations," the company said in a release.
