ADCO Millennium Hurricane Force® Membrane Adhesive Provides Perfect Solution for Medical Center

August 18, 2011
Topping the list of demands for this project was the safety and comfort of patients, visitors, and employees during construction. The challenge was to have no disruption in the daily operation of the medical center while a seventh floor was added.

Topping the list of demands for this project was the safety and comfort of patients, visitors, and employees during construction. The challenge was to have no disruption in the daily operation of the medical center while a seventh floor was added.

The facility is a 325-bed, full-service medical and surgical acute care center. The medical center has served the community since 1972 and since it opened has undergone numerous expansions and renovations. Because of the previous expansions and the community itself growing up around the hospital, the facility had become landlocked. The only possible solution for an expansion project was to add a seventh floor.

Having a hot asphalt kettle on the premises was a major safety concern for the hospital, and quickly ruled out. The offensive smell that accompanies hot asphalt was unacceptable because of concern that patients would object to the odor. Mechanical fasteners often used to attach roofing membrane were ruled out as well. The excessive noise associated with this type of installation was not an option. Finally, flame torching was also not allowed due to safety concerns.

By specifying Millennium Hurricane Force® Membrane Adhesive to attach the two-ply SBS modified bitumen waterproofing system, these concerns and challenges were eliminated. The medical center remained open throughout the construction as planned and the project was completed on time.

Millennium Hurricane Force® Membrane Adhesive is a two-component, fast setting, cold process membrane adhesive that becomes waterproof within minutes of application. It is designed for use with approved base sheets, vapor retarders and SBS modified bitumen cap sheets. It is a solvent-free formula with very low odor that offers significant advantages over solvent-based adhesives. The Membrane Adhesive is applied in ribbons resulting in a self-venting system that prevents membrane blistering. In this application a SBS base sheet was applied directly over light-weight insulating concrete. Lap and flashing adhesives with similar features are also available in the Millennium Hurricane Force® product family.

Millennium adhesives are designed for application using the ADCO One-StepTM process that eliminates error due to off ratio-mixing and pump failures, and applies adhesive with prescriptive bead spacing. Application is quick and easy, resulting in significant labor savings for the contractor. One hundred square feet of roof membrane can be installed in less than two minutes using this process. In the open field areas of the roof the Patented One StepTM Multi-Bead Plus Applicator* was used to dispense the adhesive. For tighter access areas, the Millennium One StepTM Battery Operated Applicator was used to dispense single beads of adhesive.
