GAF Materials Corporation announced that it is ceasing production operations at its Mobile, Ala. plant as a result of the challenging economy and soft market conditions.

This idling of capacity will better align supply and demand in the region for the foreseeable future, and GAF will remain prepared to reopen the plant when demand recovers. To ensure that customers in the Mobile region experience no change in service reliability, they will be serviced by GAF’s existing network of 4-wide laminators.

“The decline in the housing and construction markets has created challenging market conditions for GAF, as it has for many other roofing manufacturers,” said Bob Tafaro, President and Chief Executive Officer at GAF. “This difficult decision is necessary and appropriate for the business and our customers. Our decision is not a reflection on the Mobile employees, as their longstanding dedication and commitment to safety and quality have made this decision particularly difficult.”

Dick Nowak, GAF’s Chief Operating Officer, said GAF Materials will be able to reopen the Mobile plant when demand picks up.

“We will ensure that there will be no service interruptions, and will be providing further information on sourcing,” Nowak said.
