Commercial Roofing Contractors of Southeastern Michigan, through the Southeastern Michigan Roofing Contractors Association, along with the Roofers Union Local #149, awarded its annual college scholarships to dependents of employees of member roofing contractors.

The Governors for the Scholarship Grant Committee awarded a Scholarship Grant to college-bound students in June 2023. This year’s winners are: 

• Madison Hipshire – Riverview, Mch. 
• Haley Owens – Melvin, Mich. 
• Neve Owens – Melvin; Mich. 
• Itzel Galvan Ramirez – Detroit

Applicants were asked to submit an essay by selecting one or more of the following topics: roofing technology, roofing safety, roofing impact or roofing ethics to the Joint Union/Contractor Scholarship Committee. Winners receive scholarships in the amount of $1,000 contributed by the SMRCA, Roofers Union Local #149 and the Contractor Employer.

"Initiated over 20 years ago, this program is an example of the SMRCA/Roofers Union Local #149 and SMRCA Member Contractors working to promote continued education and to encourage industry dependents to attend college," the organizations said in a joint statement.
