The recycled shingles are helping protect the Montgomery family, including military veteran Carl (seen here) and his father, Horace, also a veteran.

GAF recently marked an exciting milestone as it continues to advance its effort to create circularity in the roofing industry. The company's Tampa, Fla. plant is scaling operations and completed its first production runs of GAF shingles made with recycled asphalt shingle content.

Now for the first time, the company installed a new roof on a residential home in Tampa using the GAF Timberline HDZ Roofcycle asphalt shingles made in Tampa.

Close to one year ago, GAF announced a new patented shingle recycling process that successfully produced the industry’s first asphalt roofing shingles containing recycled material from post-consumer and post-manufacture waste shingles that may have otherwise been landfilled. The process allows 90% of post-consumer shingle waste that the company collects to be reused in the manufacturing of new shingles.

Now those shingles are protecting the home of a deserving Tampa family. Horace Montgomery is a military veteran who lives with his son, Carl, who is also a veteran and is confined to a wheelchair. They live in the home Montgomery has owned for more than 50 years, which was in great need of a roof replacement. The work was required by the family’s home insurance company, but they were unable to afford the expense, leaving the family residence uninsured and in need of critical repairs.

GAF worked with Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County to donate all of the materials needed, including the recycled asphalt shingles, and Watertight Roofing Services also donated the labor for the installation.

This project marks the first of many as GAF has committed to donating enough recycled asphalt shingles to reroof 500 homes with its nonprofit partners this year.
