A domestic violence shelter in Gig Harbor, Wash., has received a full roof replacement at no cost, thanks to donated materials and labor from regional roofing companies and suppliers.
Kitsap Roofing partnered with PABCO Roofing Products to replace the aging roof at Family Renewal Shelter, which had been leaking and showing signs of significant wear. PABCO donated shingles, while Kitsap Roofing provided all labor for the project. Additional materials, including gutters and downspouts, were donated by ABC Supply and Pioneer Builders Supply Co.
Family Renewal Shelter has served the Pierce County community since 1986, offering confidential shelter and support services to families affected by domestic violence. Shelter staff had been managing active leaks with buckets before the replacement.
PABCO employees Brian Smith and Mel Barger first noticed the deteriorating roof during a 2024 visit to the shelter as part of the company’s Adopt a Family holiday program.
“Working in roofing, it is second nature for us to look up,” Smith said. “It was clear the roof was struggling, and once we saw buckets inside catching leaks, we knew we wanted to help.”
After PABCO committed to donating materials, Kitsap Roofing agreed to complete the installation. Labor often represents the largest portion of roofing costs, making the contribution critical to the project’s completion.
“Kitsap Roofing is honored to support an organization that has been safeguarding families in our region for nearly four decades,” said owner Zac Fain. “Providing our labor was a meaningful way to give back.”
The new roof improves the shelter’s safety and reliability, allowing staff to focus fully on supporting residents rather than managing building repairs.
