GAF Energy Relocating HQ from California to Texas
Shutting down the San Jose plant will result in nearly 140 layoffs

10/17/25: Updated with statement from GAF Energy President Martin DeBono
GAF Energy is closing its headquarters in San Jose, Calif., and relocating to its Georgetown, Texas, facility.
According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act document (WARN) filed by GAF Energy with California officials, the company will shut down the San Jose facility on Dec. 13. The facility is used for research, development and manufacturing Timberline Solar Shingles, which are nailable shingles installed alongside regular shingles.
According to the WARN document, GAF Energy will shift its operations to its 450,000-square-foot Georgetown, Texas, facility, which it completed in November 2023 and opened in May 2024.
A WARN document is filed to provide advance notice of qualified plant closing and mass layoffs. GAF Energy indicated 138 jobs will be impacted by closing the plant, including in-person and remote workers like electricians, technicians, roofers, managers and engineers.
In a written statement, GAF Energy President Martin DeBono said the decision was not made lightly and expressed gratitude to the San Jose workers for their contributions.
“In light of ongoing changes in the solar industry, we are aligning our business and our team to focus on key markets where solar is most compelling for builders and homeowners,” DeBono wrote.
The solar industry is shifting in light of President Donald Trump signing the Big Beautiful Bill in July, which is eliminating multiple solar incentives, including the 30% solar tax credit that made rooftop solar more affordable.
In addition, California has made changes to its solar industry, including NEM 3.0, which reduced energy credits by 75% for customers of PG&E, SCE and SDG&E utility companies.
"We are centralizing all Operations, Manufacturing and Research & Development at our headquarters in Georgetown, Texas to drive efficiencies, foster stronger collaboration and partnership amongst teams, and better serve customers," said DeBono.
GAF Energy is among the latest companies shifting operations to the Lone Star State in the past five years. Among them have been Tesla, X (Twitter), Chevron, and Realtor.com.
Following the completion of the Georgetown facility, GAF Energy said it is the “largest producer of solar roofing in the world.”
GAF Energy is owned by Standard Industries, which also owns roofing manufacturer GAF.
