Watts Up: The Top 100

July 23, 2009
The top 100 roofing contractors in the United States is nothing to sneer about. It takes a certain company; an immoveable philosophy; unique staying power; and most of all - millions of dollars in annual revenue to be considered one of the best.

The top 100 roofing contractors in the United States is nothing to sneer about. It takes a certain company; an immoveable philosophy; unique staying power; and most of all - millions of dollars in annual revenue to be considered one of the best. Roofing Contractor magazine compiled a list of the top 100 roofing contractors in the U.S. for its August 2009 issue. While the information received for the list was self-reported from respondents between February and July of 2009, the overall attitude of being one of the top grossing roofers is one way of saying: We are the best.

Leading the list is Tecta America Corp., of Skokie, Ill., with a mind-boggling $547 million in revenue last year. CentiMark Corp. of Pittsburgh, Pa., was No. 2 with a cool $420 million in total revenue. And coming in third on the list of the top 100 was Petersen-Dean Roofing and Solar Systems, Inc., of Newark, Calif., at nearly $238 million.

At the bottom of the top 100 contractors were successful companies like Premier Roofing of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Patrick Home Exteriors, Inc., of Little Canada, Minn., with $2 million each in revenue last year.

Of course, there are many companies out there who did not respond, while other heady contractors simply didn’t make the magical top 100 list because the list was limited to 100.

Hey, 100 can be defined in so many ways: the number of years in a century; a 100-year-old person is known as a centenarian; the U.S. Senate has 100 Senators; the number of tiles in a standard Scrabble set.

But what would it take for your company to be a top 100 roofing contractor? While our list is based solely on revenue, what other attributes - besides revenue - would help make you a top 100 roofing company in the U.S.? Or better yet, with the economic downturn, is your company meeting or exceeding the needs of customers and maintaining a challenging and safe work environment for your employees?

There are other ways to define a top 100 list, but none are better than those who reported their revenue to Roofing Contractor magazine.
