CANTON, Mass.  Sika Sarnafil, a leader in sustainable long-term solutions for roofing and waterproofing, has made a management commitment to top environmental, sustainability and safety standards by the successful registration to Responsible Care 14001:2009 and ISO 14001:2004 standards. The certification for environmental and safety standards covers the Sika Sarnafil U.S. manufacturing facility and offices in Canton, MA, and all seven other company facilities across the country.

Implementing the standards under both programs formalizes Sika Sarnafil’s commitment to constant improvement in safety and environmental performance.

“This achievement underscores our commitment and is due to the hard work and efforts of a team of Sika Sarnafil employees that worked together to assemble the program and successfully implemented it,” notes Sika Sarnafil Environmental Health and Safety Manager Mark Franklin. “Every level of the organization has been involved to some degree in its success. As a result of the implementation of these programs, we have formalized the process by which we will identify opportunities for improvement and measure our performance.”

Responsible Care is a global chemical industry performance initiative implemented in the U.S. by the American Chemical Council. Responsible Care companies have reduced environmental releases by 73 percent over the past 18 years and achieved an employee safety record that is more than four times safer than the average of the U.S. manufacturing sector as a whole. Since 1992, RC companies have reduced greenhouse gas intensity by a remarkable 23 percent. All of the more than 200 companies taking part in the Responsible Care initiative undergo headquarters and facility audits to assure that they have a structure and system in place to measure, manage and verify performance.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the world’s largest developer and publisher of International Standards. Successful registration to the ISO 14001:2004 standard means that an organization has met specific environmental management system standards. ISO is a network of the national standards of 162 countries, forming a bridge between the public and private sectors so that a consensus can be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society.

Responsible Care companies work toward no accidents, injuries or harm to the environment through a management system that helps them meet legal requirements, achieve their own targets and goals, and address stakeholder concerns. Working with community advisory panels and other public forums, they communicate with neighbors and the public about their operations and progress, with a focus on reducing risks while improving efficiency by integrating environmental, health, safety and security performance. Certification by an accredited, independent third party is mandatory – RC 14001, which combines Responsible Care with ISO 14001, provides the Sika Sarnafil verification.
